4.0 out of 5 stars I GET A KICK OUT OF COLE, February 13, 2011
This review is from: Songs of (Audio CD)
This is an eclectic compilation of Cole Porter standards, mostly in versions he'd have heard in his lifetime, by some of the best bands and singers around. Libby Holman's idiosyncratic rendition of "Love for Sale" was one of the few versions at that time which included the words. In contrast, much as I like the QHCF's recording of "In the Still of the Night", Tommy Dorsey's "Night and Day", and James P. Johnson's "What is this Thing Called Love?", all are instrumentals, so we don't hear Porter's lyrics. The CD dates from 1993, and runs to 21 tracks, but the tracklist is very basic, and neglects to give details of recording dates, and some accompaniments are unspecified. Finally, Porter wrote "You're the Top", not "You're the Tops!"
