This review is from: Songs of Debussy & Faure (Audio CD)
'Songs of Debussy and Faure' by soprano Benita Valente, with piano by Lydia Artymiw will not shake any foundations, but it is long cool drink of water after listening to a run of late 19th century Lieder. Now I love Schubert's Lieder as much or more than the next Deutchophile, but there are simply just so many works based on the sweet sounding poems of Goethe and Heine to go around. I will argue until the cows come home that in hands like these, German, when properly pronounced, is as fine a vehicle for Romantic art as its southern 'Romance Language' neighbors. But you still can't beat French for sounding sweet, regardless of what is being said.
And, while Debussy is known well enough, this album gives Faure equal time, and it shows that he deserves it. |
