Book Description

January 1, 1997
Poetry. Native American Studies. Winner of the North American Native Authors First Book Award and The Diane Decorah Award for Poetry. These pages take us on a rich and fascinating journey, transporting us through history on memory's voices, singing a new vision of the familiar. Though her subjects vary from a visit to the mission at White Earth to parking a car, Denise Sweet brings freshness to each. The poems leave markers where they have touched us, places we will return to to remember the startling beauty of a phrase, the quiet wisdom of a story, the good humor of our poet companion. She carries us to the brink of discovery; her words push us over -- Kim Blaeser, author of TRAILING YOU. This poem began five hundred years ago / this morning when I traced the numbers / of generations of our grandchildren, / Mr Columbus. The great -great-great-greats / of oppspring that discovered you (The 500-year-old Poem). Densie Sweet is an Anishinaabe enrolled at White Earth, and a professor of Humanist

4.0 out of 5 stars A delightful romp through the Sentinel and the garden, May 11, 1998

This review is from: Songs for Discharming (Paperback)
The imagery in Denise's poetry makes a person laugh and cry sometimes in the same poem. A contempory native perspective ranging from current events like the Oklahoma bombing tradegy to migration of the soul and the body.
