Product Description

Amazon.com

Joe Pass was a classic jazz guitarist whose technical control of his instrument, even-handed tone, and ability to deconstruct standard melodies for improvisational purposes was unsurpassed. His mainstream style encompassed swing and bop, making him the perfect house guitarist for Norman Granz at Pablo records. The 1992 set Songs for Ellen is a departure from the rest of Pass's work for Pablo in that it is his only all-acoustic solo guitar album. Keyed by the beautiful ballad, "For Ellen," the recording shows Pass completely at home playing such standards as "The Shadow of Your Smile," "I Only Have Eyes for You," "That Old Feeling," "Someone to Watch Over Me," "How Deep in the Ocean," and "Stormy Weather." --John Swenson

The Amazon reviewer above made a mistake. This is not the only all acoustic solo guitar album by Joe Pass. "I Remember Charlie Parker" is a solo album with Joe playing a nylon string acoustic guitar. It is also highly recommended.

Smooth, cool, just so right. Joes playing reaches for your soul and gently draws you in. As you listen, all you need to know is here. The man has such a delicacy of touch, that it seems that he is playing for you alone, and that he knows your inermost thoughts and feelings. If , like me you cannot play, but wish you could. Buy this album and weep for your loss, and his genius.

As a classically trained guitarist, I often thought that Jazz musicians showed a complete disregard for melody, but not Joe. His playing is absolutely stunning, and beautifully melodic. This record transformed my ideas of what music should be. Buy it.

Supposedly this was done towards the end of Joe Pass's life. To me it shows his passion for his music and the woman he loved. His abilities on the acoustic guitar are mind boggleing!. The warmth, even smooth flow, and that amazing abiltity to get such fantastic harmonics will always amaze me. I've been playing guitar for near fifty years, and if I could get just a small fraction of Pass's amazing talent, I would be content. Obviously the best jazz guitarist of all time. I have his CD's in my car and in my home, I listen to him almost non-stop. You won't be dissapointed
