Editorial Reviews

Product Description

A startling alchemy of strange-but-true history, haunting instrumentation, and sterling songwriting, Piñataland have become experts at conjuring the sad strangeness of history to life with violin, tuba, accordion, guitar and drums. The band's music, lurching from the epic and grandiose to the aching and elegiac, evokes some never-existing strain of pre-WWII chamber-rock.

Review

Timeless ballads full of explosive dynamics, strange instrumentation and ethereal harmonies. --Paste Magazine

Every once in a rare while, after sifting through mountains of half-hearted indie-pop offerings and sophomoric verse-chorus-verse chatter, we music writers stumble upon a record that reminds us of why we do what it is we do. These little reminders are records that push boundaries and twist genres, that speak in terms we never quite anticipate, that resonate on an emotional level as much as they speak to technical prowess or invention. Songs for the Forgotten Future Vol. 1, the full-length debut from the Brooklyn-based quintet Piñataland, is one of these rare and wonderful records...an act that seems to be calling on a countless amount of influences and crafting something strange and beautiful from a musical past that we seem to have forgotten or never knew in the first place...Songs for the Forgotten Future Vol. 1 is nothing less than a masterpiece. --Delusions of Adequacy

Refreshingly original...Pinataland's penchant for historical perspective seems to know no bounds...the yearning folksy strum and woozy twang propel it beyond the realm of a tuneful history lesson. In their hands, it becomes a stirring meditation on the definably human theme of promises broken, of being f***ed over by uncontrollable forces. That it's done to a searingly lonesome country-inflected twang, augmented by strings, tuba, piano and all manner of vintage instrumentation, is almost besides the point. --Splendid Magazine

Too modern to be revivalists, too weird to be called "pop," too smart to be just a novelty act...there isn't really a word to describe what Pinataland does on "Songs for the Forgotten Future Vol. 1." The instrumentation (accordion, violin, tuba, guitar, drums) conjures images of some moth-eaten Salvation Army band. The witty and literate lyrics seem to back up that image, as they all revolve around bizarre, forgotten tidbits of history. But then there's the singing of Doug Stone and David Wechsler, which wouldn't sound out of place on an early '90's K Records release. And the arrangements of the songs themselves break down any easy labels for the music; they're simple enough to get stuck in your head for days on end but complex enough to allow you to discover bizarre little corners after repeated listenings. Every song does exactly what you want it to do but never in a way that you expect. Recommended for fans of Thomas Edison, P.T. Barnum, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, lonely astronauts, pygmies, pickpockets, the Tiger Lillies, and anyone who's ever dreamed of landing a plane in Red Square.

I bought Songs for the Forgotten Future soon after it came out, and it was on repeat for--no exaggeration--months. The album still holds up extremely well and is a tour de force, using vintage samples to set the tone of each track.

Songs about bizarre moments in history from a truly old(world)-school, but still truly unique band. Great melodies mixed with odd instrumentation. HIGHLY recommend.

This is a wonderful album. The vocals of Doug Stone and Dave Wechsler complement each other like Brinkley/Huntley. The instrumentation is at times inspiring and at other times somber and reflective. Its almost orchestral, with accordian, sousaphone, violin, guitar, and drums. The songs deal with stuff you never heard in history class, but its all true, you can look it up.
