Product Description

Amazing arrangements of familiar songs Redemption Song, Mercedes Benz,
and many others performed in a truly original style! A collection of Nguyên Lê s favorite songs of freedom: Bob
Marley s Redemption Song sits alongside hits from Led
Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton, and
The Beatles, whose Eleanor Rigby and Come Together
frame this unique album.
These aren t your standard cover versions! Lê unearths these
icons of pop and rock history from their dust- (or gold-) covered
depths and brings them to the present day with the help of
exceptional guests from all over the world.
Special guests give their own personal stamp: Youn Sun Nah,
Dhafer Youssef, David Linx, David Binney, Chris Speed,
Prabhu Edouard, and Karim Ziad, to name just a few.
With these 15 songs, Lê impressively brings together a wide
range of individuals and sounds West merges with East, North
with South, great vocals with instrumental virtuosity, and the
melodic legacy of the past with the sound of the future!

Review

Few musicians embody the word fusion more than Parisianborn
guitarist Nguyên Lê ... for the past 25 years he s been mining
a combination of fusion by the more conventional definition the
infusion of rock energy into the jazz sphere with fusion in a
broader sense, the seamless integration of music from cultures
around the world. --All About Jazz

A masterful, inventive player who has cultivated a wholly unique
voice on the instrument, he ranks right up there with Bill Frisell,
John Scofield, Mike Stern, and Allan Holdsworth in the post-
Hendrix world of jazz guitar. --Jazz FM

This is yet another astounding collection of songs reimagined by Vietnamese Guitar virtuoso Nguyen Le. If you are already familiar with him, I don't need to sell you. If you are curious as to who really got Hendrix, look no further. Le's take on teh Hendrix canon, Purple, was a masterpiece and made the point categorically that Le knew where to go with the spirit as well as the notes Hendrix created. In a survey of tunes from that time, here on this disc, Le makes it clear that The Beatles, Led Zep, Cream, Marley and Stevie Wonder could be recast in hues uniquely South East Asian, South Asian and Parisian, like fine diamonds to promote a fuller appreciation for their remarkable ntures. The music is great. His accompaniests and singers spot on. You'll be hitting replay for hours listening to this disc.
Bookended by Eleanor Rigby and Come Together, the disc deconstructs Black Dog, Move Over, Whole Lotta Love, Sunshine of Your Love and even Innagaddadavida and then reassembles them from a world music perspective that breathes brand new life into great, great songs. Think you know these tunes? Give a listen. Certainly, the one that will pull at your heart is Marley's Redemption Song. It was then and is now a song for the ages. Le clearly had the message of the times, the zeitgeist of that age, at heart in putting this together. This is a masterpiece, right up there with Purple and Tales From Viet Nam.

In many ways a follow up to Nguyen's brilliant Hendrix tribute Purple (Dig)This is a highly creative take on some of rock's most iconic tunes.

Adventurous, free flowing versions of songs by Beatles, Cream, Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin and not to forget Iron Butterfly's "In A Gadda Da Vida". Not watered down takes as on Santana's "Guitar Heaven", but personal interpretations, more often than not drifting into hypercomplex odd metre passages. And full of world music hints bringing an Indian flavor to "Whole Lotta Love". Stellar vocals from a host of guests that gives their stamp to the songs. With some gender switching perhaps most significant in Joplin's "Move Over"

The album also drifts into soul (Stevie Wonder) and brings a downright beautiful vocal/guitar version of Marley's "Redemption Songs". Everything anchored in best possible way by Linley Marthe on bass - known as the last bass hero with Zawinul Syndicate and the propulsive drumming of Stéphane Galland.

On top of it this ofc the always creative fretwork of the man himself, mixing hints of the original guitarheroes with his obvious influences from Holdsworth and McLaughlin.

All in all a stuning effort not to be missed!

A collection of his favourite songs of freedom: Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" sits alongside hits from Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton and the Beatles, whose "Eleanor Rigby" and "Come Together" frame the album "Songs of Freedom" isn't an album featuring standard cover versions.

Instead, familiar melodies are introduced with great respect to pulsating new sound streams from all over the world. Nguyên Lê takes the liberty to unearth these icons of pop and rock history from their dust (or gold) covered depths and brings them to the present day and to the global village, with the help of his own formidable musical prowess as well as many exceptional guests from all over the world who provide support in his band.
