5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful revelation March 6, 2011

Format:Audio CD
The soprano Sivan Rotem and the pianist Jonathan Zak, both professionals in Tel Aviv, feature in this performance of songs by the German composer Giacomo Meyerbeer (1791-1864). The CD provides a splendidly fresh and accomplished recital that throws much light on the neglected musical output of a great composer famous for his large-scale operas. The songs--in Italian, French and German--represent a cross-section of the composer's more intimate lyrical abilities, from the early youthful mini-song cycle with words by Metastasio, depicting the vicissitudes of a passionate relationship, through tender reflections on prayer, baptism and religious devotion, to larger dramatic scenas and Biblical ballads of betrayed or forbidden love. The forms, from crisp lyrics of love and spring to more complex psychological mono- and duodramas of attraction and abandonment, reveal the variety of the European art song in the mid-19th century, and the composer's response to the unique nuanced demands of each language group. Meyerbeer's more overt Lieder, like those to words by his brother Michael Beer, and the three famous settings of Heine, show his independence of thought. These songs are very different from the better-known Schubert and Schumann versions, revealing a depth of wistful, hesitant tenderness over Schmann's gabbled irony ("Die Rose, die Lilie, die Taube"), or a sinister intuition of dark intent over Schubert more gemütliches, folksy apprehension of the words ("Komm, du liebes Fischermädchen"). Meyerbeer's use of the piano can seem deceptively simple, but actually in its subtle tonalities, harmonic progressions, ostinatos and moody commentary, conveys a whole range of emotion and pictorialism.
