Les Mystere Des Voix Georgia!,
By John Koella (Saratoga Springs, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Songs From Georgia (Audio CD)
For some reason this album is not included in the Georgian music section of Amazon, yet this album is all about Georgia. The complex and interwoven polyphony of these ancient folk songs accompanied by traditional instruments of the Caucasus is transcendant. Just as Les Mystere des Voix Bulgares, this music seems at the same time primitive and mysterious, yet beautiful, melodic, and highly developed. The notes that accompany the CD are exceptional, describing in detail the styles of singing (simple polyphonic, contrasting polyphonic, complex polyphonic, and monodic), the instruments (chonguri, salmuri, and panduri), and the repertoire (patriotic songs, lyric love songs, table songs, labour songs, and songs of calendar rituals.) My favorites are "Megreli nana," a lullaby sung in contrasting polyphony, and "Batonebo," a complex polyphonic spiritual song for the healing of ill children. If you enjoy folk music from ancient cultures, you'll enjoy these.
