5.0 out of 5 stars expressive distinctive vocals and sparkling instrumentals, August 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Songs From Gretna to Glencoe (Audio CD)
Maria Anthony Rumple@aol.com Aug1999 Alastair McDonald is one of the finest Scots singers of any generation. The songs on this recording range from sensitive ballads and evocative love songs to humorous clever pieces and rousing martial ballads. His guitar and banjo accompaniment are flawless, and the arrangements are always perfectly apprropriate. He has the ability to use his voice in brilliant interpretation of each song. Alastair McDonald has a large catalog of recordings in a variety of styles, and this is one of the best(along with Velvet and Steel and Honest Poverty, it truly captures the essence of Scottish sing).

5.0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL, May 6, 2000
This review is from: Songs From Gretna to Glencoe (Audio CD)
I bought the album for one song only, and ended up loving the entire disc. A must have for those who appreciate classic folk in the truest sense.

5.0 out of 5 stars On the road with Alastair, June 15, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Songs From Gretna to Glencoe (Audio CD)
All tour managers doing their best to interpret Scotland for overseas tourists bless the name of Alastair McDonald. His music and words have just helped me help make sense of the complex, sad and proud history of Scotland and sent 21 travellers back home to Canada very happy and with a greater sense of understanding of what for many of them is the land of their forefathers.

What is so great about the tracks - and this was also so with his album "The Songs of Scotland" - is that you can line them up and hit the play button just as you are going into a specific area. Alastair can tell the story of a place more eloquently in song than any of us can through a coach mike. Thanks mate, you helped make a good trip a great one!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for McDonalds, November 12, 2002

As a great, great, great grandson of Duncan McDonald of Glencoe this album is very special. Our family loves James Taylor...and the feeling of the works of the two artists is very similar. I highly recommend this album.

We went to Scotland in 1996 for our 20 year annivasary. I picked up the tape there. Iplayed all the time in my car. I lost it when I had an accident and totaled my car. I loved that tape. I am Scottish, and It made me long to go back to Scotland. I am going to get another one, if I can.Ido other Scottish tapes, but this one is special.
