Sandi's Dove Award nominated new 2008 release "Songs for the Journey" is her best album since her all-time greatest set "Morning Like This" from 1986. A Morning Like This This effort blends the sounds that make a Sandi concert, and album, work: stirring worship and praise numbers, spotlight Diva moments, Inspirational delights in a healing theme of grace overflowing and one wildly funky Gospel tune to mix it up before Sandi hits a high note of sanctified ecstacy. "Songs for the Journey" stands out, in part, because of the extraordinary arrangements. Terry Winch takes the old Thanksgiving Protestant war horse hymn "Praise to the Lord the Almighty" and turns it into an almost rollicking Gospel dance number in the same vein as Sandi's unforgettable "Let There Be Praise". Tim Akers gives Sandi the perfect outline for making "Through It All" a living five minutes of audio faith to bless the Sandi discography. Sandi high-note aficianados can rejoice in the David Hamilton arranged finish to "My Tribute" and "Joyful Joyful" which imitates, down to the last note, a John Williams Boston Symphony Pops or "Star Wars" fanfare set piece. If John Williams wrote Symphony arrangements for Sandi Patty, this "Joyful Joyful" demonstrates exactly what that would have sounded like. Sandi makes the stunning song "Were It Not for Grace" her own in this album's signature track. The closing "Savior Medley", arranged by Steve Potts, is the most gorgeous Hymns Medley in Sandi's recorded hymn collections. Sandi has rarely sounded better and her energy and joy for this project is evident in her brilliant vocals on every track. In the liner notes, there is a photo of Sandi apparently dancing in front of a window similar to the window in the album cover of "Morning Like This". Sandi has risen from her place of reflection to step up and dance and she has found her Voice in this album like never before. We get the privilege to Journey with the greatest Contemporary Christian artist of them all. Layers: Uncovering and Celebrating God's Original Idea of Me Falling Forward

5.0 out of 5 stars More Great songs from Sandi, June 4, 2008
This review is from: Songs for the Journey (Audio CD)
Sandi's new album is full of great classic worship songs that take me back. Some of the songs like "Be Thou My Vision", "Joyful Joyful", and "Praise To the Lord The Almighty" have been covered many times, but Sandi's version of them are epic, and they are in fact my favorite songs on the album. The overall feel of the album in general is very epic and grand. It makes you feel like you're there watching the big performance from Sandi, and makes you want to join in and worship along with her. This album is definately one that any Sandi Patty fan will enjoy. I'm actually pretty new to Sandi's music, and have greatly enjoyed the songs on this album. It's definately one to check out!

"Songs For The Journey" truly knocked my socks off. I don't expect to love every song on an album, no matter who made it and this one is no exception. Like a previous reviewer, "Operator" turned me off ... always has, always will, but the dynamic with which Sandi performs the others far exceeds my expectations. "For Good" with Sheila Walsh, who herself has come a very long way from her days on the "700 Club", {Have you seen her "Women of Faith" retelling of the'Prodigal Son' -- Outstanding) I find haunting and beautiful each time I hear it. Sandy has the rare ability to make standard hymns come fully alive. "Be Thou My Vision" found in most hymn books for years has come into its own Sandy puts it on the map for me. Sandy's singing of "Were It Not For Grace" reminds me of the extraordinary grace and love I've been given. This is a GREAT CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars "The Voice" is better than ever!, June 19, 2008
This review is from: Songs for the Journey (Audio CD)
This CD is very enjoyable! From the inspirational "My Tribute" to the lovely duet with her husband, Sandi manages to turn songs that you may or may not have heard before into true masterpieces! This CD remains in the player in my car and arrived just in time as my family was dealing with the loss of a friend's child. The song "Through it All" certainly attested to her own (and my own!) growth as a Christian. I would highly recommend this CD to anyone who is already a Sandi Patty fan or someone who would listen to her soaring voice for the first time and realize they may have just experienced a little taste of Heaven.

Sandi keeps on making fantastic music. I like every song on this album. Her voice is so pure and I love the way she puts feeling into her songs. If you want an album to lift your spirits, this like all of Sandi's work, will do the trick.

4.0 out of 5 stars Familiar Favorites, May 31, 2008
This review is from: Songs for the Journey (Audio CD)
This CD is Sandi Patty's take on several familiar songs and hymns, such as "Be Thou My Vision," "Ode to Joy," and "'Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus." As always, her voice shines brightly. Patty and her husband, Don Peslis, bring on their opera voices on "Panis Angelcus," sung both in Latin and English. The CD contains another duet, "For Good," where Sandi is joined by fellow Women of Faith team member, Sheila Walsh. Sandi Patty brings out her soulful, gospel voice on the toe-tappin' "Operator." Two special gems on this CD are covers of Andrae Crouch classics, "Through it All," and "My Tribute."
There's only one thing I wonder about "Songs for the Journey:" why does it include the song, "You Call Me Yours," when that song is on Sandi Patty's very recent CD, "Falling Forward" ? But if you are a Sandi fan, don't let that stop you from getting a copy of "Journey."

This CD is sensational. Sandi has really outdone herself with this CD. Her Joyful, Joyful we Adore Thee is
great. Saw her sing this in person and she is phenomenal. Well worth your money.

Let's cut to the chase. This record is all about the producer, not the artist. Some of the production is so overwhelming that it's overshadowing the artist. Why is Sandi allowing her work to go this direction? We have bought all of her records through decades now, and given away many, many copies of her CDs in the past for others to enjoy. With this recording, we played it once and stuck it on the shelf.

This album is disjointed, and the title is misleading. It's a journey with no destination other than putting together a group of unrelated, disjointed, and, quite frankly, uninteresting songs -- a hodge-podge that has no connectivity at all. Where is Sandi Patty -- the voice we all love and want to hear?

Most of the artwork is stunning -- Sandi at her most beautiful. However, another reviewer mentioned Sandi dancing around in a photograph inside the cover. Sandi allowed that to be published? Think "What Not to Wear," and fire the stylist. We wanna see Glammy Sandi.

If I hear one more Gaither tune, I am going to hurl. And how many times can one endure "My Tribute," no matter who is singing it? My former church is in a rut. It's either Gaither tunes -- the same ones repeatedly -- or death-dirge songs there, and it's one reason we left. See where I'm going here?

Above it all just the same, Sandi's voice is top-notch. Two tunes are the best (and the only ones listenable): "For Good" and "Were It Not For Grace." She gives Larnelle a run for his money on his version. Sandi's take is phenomenal. These two showcase Sandi's God-given talent and are worth playing more than once. Also, be certain to see Sandi in concert. Wow! What a performer and an amazing example of God's creation in music and song!

Sorry, folks. We played this CD once all the way through, and we've parked it on the CD shelf. Try "Find It On the Wings" or "LeVoyage" for a much better glimpse at what this artist can do. Rock on, Sandi, just the same. We love you, baby!
