5.0 out of 5 stars Making the pie higher
From the name of the group, the CD warning label ("Explicit Grammar") and song titles such as "Nucular" and "Commiserate/Not Commiserate" you might expect the band to be blatantly anti-Bush... Well, they might be, but after a couple of close listens they seem to be mostly making fun of his grammar. They do make his "Bushisms" look even more ridiculous than he does...

2.0 out of 5 stars Mildly Humorous-Not funny
The Bush singers are somewhat amusing but the over-produced 60s' style harmonies can get old after a couple of songs

They do make his "Bushisms" look even more ridiculous than he does (thereby heling him look uber-idiotic at times) with some of their arrangements.

Listeners should check out the acapella spiritual-style choral rendering of Dubya's famous "There's an old saying in Tennessee..." mishap. "There ought to be limits to freedom", "put food on your family" and other gems are included in this collection. The singing is better than average, and the vocal group does well in setting Bush's neologisms and strange grammatic constructions to music. Actual sound bytes are heard from Bush, then the singers "answer" him in song. What I find especially fun is that if Bush stutters or repeats a few syllables... the singers do the same! "Uh, uh, uh..."

This CD is "ingrinable". Styles range from gospel to funk to reggae to old Mitch Miller-ish stuff. Whether you despise Bush or whether you adore him and find his Bushisms to be the stuff of cutesy cuddly folksiness, you will probably enjoy this disc. Warning: it is only about 30 minutes long. It bears repeated listening during the election season, although I would guess only the strongest Bush-haters will listen to it if Kerry wins in November. If Bush wins (perish the thought) this one might never leave my CD player as I anxiously await the release of a sequel... although I don't think they could make the pie much higher than this.

5.0 out of 5 stars It IS hard to put food on your family..., July 19, 2004

This record works on a number of levels - but the best one is that it is just plain funny. And, it's a piece of history. I, personally, don't ever want to forget that GWB wants me to give "4000 years over the rest of (my) life in service to America." Funny for comedy fans - those on the right AND left. I defy anyone - Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Green or otherwise to listen and not chuckle. Even a little bit...

4.0 out of 5 stars does humour belong in politics, August 18, 2004
This review is from: Songs in the Key of W (Audio CD)
The beauty of this record is that every The American President said every word.
That is funny.
That is scary.
I find if I try and review the record I end up reviewing G.W.B.
The tunes are barbershop harmonies, The New Christy Minstrels meets G.W.B.
There is no political comment, just the words, just the facts.
On first listen its hard to catch everything, I found myself wanting to hear the original speech just to verify that someone so powerful could be so inarticulate.
With the right exposure I can see this being quite a hit and not just in The U.S.A, what The President decides affects us all.
Is that funny or scary.

This album is hysterical. The only complaint is that it is a short album, only like 30 minutes. Every track is a gem. OK, so the singers aren't exactly of Swingle Singer quality, but the orchestrations and musicianship make up for it... they have a really fine band. The best thing are the lyrics, courtesy of GW Bush. It is scary and funny at the same time. I really enjoyed the variety of musical styles, and the way they took a particular lyric and matched it with the right fitting song/melody. I wish they would do another album. Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Riot!!! And I'm a Republican!, August 6, 2005
This review is from: Songs in the Key of W (Audio CD)
Okay, honestly, this group obviously isn't taking their task seriously, and in that regard, I can't give 5 stars. Comedy just falls short of art.

With that said, this CD is pretty catchy, a fun listen, and worth a laugh.

I'm a diehard Republican Bush-voter, and you'd have to shoot me before I'd vote for a Barabara Boxer, Ted Kennedy, or Hillary Clinton. Still, I can laugh at my party's own imperfections, and this is definitely worth laughing over.

The President can and has delivered powerful speeches when the moment mandated, but when the moment wasn't so pressng, well, he has slipped up. A lot more than most politicians.

Honestly, I think W would approve of this CD (it certainly doesn't stink of some of the propaganda thrown his way). He seems to almost relish saying the word, "nucular" and driving people nuts, even bringing up this mispronunciation in a speech of his. Laughing at yourself is a good thing. And for all the Republicans out there who might give this a low star rating just because it might be constued as anti-Bush, give it a try. And laugh a little bit as you take those 4 more years to the bank!

5.0 out of 5 stars He says it, they sing it--brilliant!, July 18, 2004

Hilarious and absurd! If you liked A MIGHTY WIND and LAUGH-IN, then you'll definitely find this record funny. The GWB Singers take actual quotes from Mr. Bush and turn them into songs. The quotes take on a whole new level of absuridity when accompanied by a choir in styles ranging from country, rock, and reggae to a Hawaiian ballad. It's suprisingly infectuous. After a few listens, I found myself singing along to "Commiserate, Not Commiserate" and couldn't get "4000 Hours" out of my head for days. And the "grammatical advisory" sticker cracks me up! Just when I needed a good laugh about the state of American politics. I'll bet W himself will be laughing along.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perhaps this year's best political parody album, July 19, 2004
By
This review is from: Songs in the Key of W (Audio CD)
"Songs in the Key of W" takes outrageous statements made by GWB ("It'll take time to restore chaos", "we'll be more better at cleaning our air") and sets them to different styles of music, from country to a cappella to pop soul. This concept was done before in the great (long out-of-print) political masterpiece "Washington is For the Birds," which made singers out of LBJ, Nixon, Goldwater and others. What makes "Songs" a great album is not only the very clever and catchy nature of the music and GWB's grammatical gaffes, but also the verve with which the singers approach each tune. They do a great job of vocalizing with great bubbly sincerity, almost like having Up with People sing for Nixon. With the bizzare statements they have to work with, this is not easy. Anyone familiar with the song-poems work of Rod Keith will recognize how off-kilter, funny, and thoroughly entertaining this album is.

4.0 out of 5 stars God bless their souls... these guys are BRILLIANT., July 28, 2004
This review is from: Songs in the Key of W (Audio CD)
As heard on "The Randi Rhodes" show. The tunes are catchy. The singing is wonderful (you know, on key and all that. This CD has very high production values!). The music is a little conventional, sounding a bit lounge-y. Most of all, you'll laugh your (another word for 'rear end') off at the quotes from the president. These are not parodies. They are literally sound clips of things actually said by the president, which the Singers sing to music. They don't NEED to make fun of the President. The Singers leave that as an excercise to the listener.
