5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Achievement!
Helen Schneider is one of the greatest vocalists of our time...a "singer's singer", who interprets with intelligence and passion, using an instrument so versatile and amazing, that she should have a new cd every 6 months! Helen Schneider is one of the greatest vocalists of our time...a "singer's singer", who interprets with intelligence and passion, using an instrument so versatile and amazing, that she should have a new cd every 6 months! This Weill CD gives just an inkling...She wrings the heart, pathos and melodic beauty out of these challenging songs...Listen to the youth and sensuality she projects in "Stranger Here Myself", then contrast the weary longing in"Sept.Song"...Helen Schneider's singing is a thrilling, emotional experience...I could LIVE in the closing note of the haunting "I Wait For a Ship"...Dont pass any opportunity to discover this special woman's genius, whether on disc or stage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent readings of Kurt Weill, July 6, 1999

I only knew Helen Schneider from her stint as Norma Desmond in the German language production of Sunset Blvd., but this is an awesome recording. Here interpretations of songs like Pirate Jenny, Surabaya Johnny, and Barbara's Song are no less than brilliant. She also does a great jazz treatment of I'm A Stranger Here Myself. She excels both musically and dramatically (IMO a feat shared only by the likes of Judy Garland and Betty Buckley).

I have all Helen's early albums on vinyl...this CD is very good and gives you just a taste of what this talented woman is capable of...why she never made it as a great songstress of our time is confusing to me...if anyone out there knows where i can get her first two albums on CD's, "Helen Schneider" and "Let It Be Me", please email me! I only hope someone will put this incredible voice back to where it was once headed many years ago! Treat yourself and go get this CD! You'll be begging for more! Let's see if we can help her get just due!

4.0 out of 5 stars What a voice!, May 23, 1999

This review is from: Songs of Kurt Weill (Audio CD)
Helen Schneider has a voice that is as large as Judy Garland's and as dramatic, too. Sometimes, her records sound a little overproduced, but here the songs and the arrangements are a good match for the would-be diva. The songs of Kurt Weill contain enough dramatic sweep to handle both her grand voice and her grand interpretations.
