Editorial Reviews

'Songs to Make Dogs Happy' is the first album of its kind. A bouncy collection of tunes made from the dogs' point of view. No, the dogs did not record the songs or bark on the album. Although you probably haven't heard this much panting since you listened to your old Donna Summer albums. Quicksilver. 2005.

According to "animal communicator" Dr. Kim Ogden-Avrutik (her picture is on the cover--she's the one on the right, by the way), this is the kind of music Fido likes to listen to. Dr. Ogden-Avrutik conducted numerous focus group discussions, and she learned that Rover and his pals are not overly fond of certain drum sounds (it too closely resembles gunshots) and (here's a shocker!) they don't like to hear the word "no."

Conducting my own limited focus group with my one-year-old cocker spaniel Scooter, I played a few tracks for him. "Squeakey-Deakey!" certainly got his attention. He would paw at the speakers every time the rubber toy was squeaked. But he showed little interest in the other songs like "I'll Be Back," "Scratch My Back," or "I Like Food." After a few minutes, he opted to chase the cat instead.

When I asked him what he didn't like about the songs (I'm an amateur dog whisperer myself), Scooter said he found most of the songs a bit too condescending. "Your a Good Dog," for example, spouts the kind of feel-good babble you might expect from Dr. Phil: "You are so adorable...how beautiful you are...you are so cute...." He just didn't find them very sincere. He wanted to know where are songs like "I'm in Love with Your Leg," "Chowing Down at the Litter Box Buffet," or "Booty-Scootin' Boogie"? If he had a choice, Scooter said he'd rather listen to Joe Cocker. (I'm not sure he meant that, or if he was just making a lame joke--he's a "cocker" spaniel, remember?)

Ok I admit it I bought this CD after having heard about it on NPR - My husband laughed at me as I placed my order for this and laughed more when he heard the songs. Now he and the dogs have a ritual. He puts it on and chats with the dogs and they curl up and for the duration of the CD they are good as gold NOTHING phases them they just relax and unwind. It could be just quality time with him or the songs themselves whatever it is - It works ! The downside: I have heard my husband humming "I'm an Adventure Dog"

cheesy, but hysterical, and oddly effective! I was skeptical too. But my dog (4 yo shep mix) Vera seems to genuinely enjoy this cd - some of the tunes like 'squeaky deaky' and 'adventure dog' (the funniest) get her more worked up than others, but even the milder tunes have her leaving my side (a rarity) to be in the room with the stereo - and in bliss when I follow her in to play with her during the songs. If your dog's behavior tends to crack you up anyway then this cd should provide lots of joy.

I heard about this cd via [...] The creator stated that it can be used to calm dogs when you leave the house. I played the 3 tracks on their website, and while my dog Mollie (my adopted, previously abused Chihuhua) appeared interested at first, by the third time I played them (on the third day), she appeared bored. I thought that was that, but as the songs are catchy and simple to learn, I found myself singing them occasionally as I went about doing chores in the house.....and that's how the fun began. I would start singing them to Mollie as she walked by or lay near me and she seemed to respond to it. So I tried something new - I sat her on my lap, which she never liked and rarely wanted to stay - and sung the songs to her from NPRs site. Since the songs are so different, it was easy to modify exactly HOW I sang each song to her...I sing "Squeaky Deaky" to her while we twirl and bounce on the office chair together, I rock her and hug her close when singing "You're a Good Dog", and I scratch her vigerously all over while singing "Scratch my Back". I tell you, Mollie LOVES this, really, truly. She now even willingly sits on my lap, even if the music isn't on, and that happened after only 3-4 times singing to her. She even licked my "scratching" hand for 10 minutes after the music ended, one time; it was very touching. So, needless to say, I bought the cd, and use it often. I love singing to her - its a fun time for both of us, and I feel she can sense the love in my voice. I would strongly recommend this cd as a way for people to bond with a dog that is newly adopted, especially if it was previously abused, because I feel that the dog can hear the love, patience and gentleness in its new owners voice, and it learns to trust (Of course, stroking the dog, etc.Read more ›

This is a CD of songs for dogs. According to the advertisement on the Internet -- and if we cannot trust advertisements on the Internet, what CAN we trust? -- this CD is, quote, 'the first qualitatively and quantitatively researched musical CD, based upon 200 canine participants' decisions as to what THEY would like to hear in songs!''

You read that correctly: This musical CD has been researched qualitatively AND quantitatively. Just TRY to find another selection of songs for dogs that can make that claim.

We here at the gift guide are not, personally, a dog, but we did listen to several of the songs on this CD, including Squeaky Deaky, in which a man sings about a squeaky toy, which can be heard squeaking rhythmically. ''Squeaky Deaky,'' sings the man. ''I love my squeaky toy! It makes me jump for joy!''

We also listened to You're a Good Dog and My Beautiful Bed. We concluded that, if you had to describe in a single word the kind of music that dogs like, based on this collection of qualitatively and quantitatively researched songs, that word would be: ''bad.''

But this is not about us. This is about what musical gift to give to that special dog on your holiday list. We recommend Ray Charles.
