Editorial Reviews

2011 two CD compilation from the British Folk/Rock singer/songwriter. Of the generation of troubadours who came of age in the Folk clubs of London in the mid-1960s, some have passed away, others have surrendered to the regurgitation of the blandest form of acoustic Folk music. But among the survivors, there is one figure whose body of work, comprising 23 studio LPs and almost as many live and compilation releases, has come to stand for a particularly single-minded form of integrity. That man is Roy Harper. Living in a secluded corner of Ireland, Harper has recently been hailed as a key influence by a much younger generation of devoted starsailors who instinctively recognize his innovations, his refusal to compromise and his visionary world view. Joanna Newsom insisted she'd only play her recent UK shows if he would support her. The likes of Fleet Foxes and Jim O'Rourke are avowed fans; and in previous decades he has enjoyed public endorsements and tributes from the likes of Led Zeppelin, Kate Bush, Pink Floyd's Dave Gilmour and many others. Salvo.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Introduction April 15, 2013
Format:Audio CD
Roy Harper is one of those legendary musicians that I'd known about for years and years, but until I bought this compilation a few months ago I don't think I'd ever heard a single song by him. Shameful, I know. In any case, I'm very happy that I've finally taken the plunge. This is a lovely collection of tunes, very much in an acoustic folk music mode, but with jazz chords highlighting some songs. In addition to Harper's acoustic guitar playing prowess, his vocals are very pleasant. He reminds me a bit of Robyn Hitchcock in that context.

This 2-CD set is apparently designed to highlight Harper's "Love Songs", but don't expect a lot of sweet, saccharine ballads. In the liner notes to this collection, Harper writes: "my love songs are often hidden by the more epic things I attempt." Whether these songs strike you as "songs of love and loss" or not, this is deeply affecting music that resonates. I'm embarrassed that it took me so long to discover Roy Harper's music, but this is only a fraction of what he recorded, so at least there's more to hear. My only complaint is the length of the music on these discs. Disc one clocks in at 43 minutes and disc 2 nearly breaks the 50 minute barrier. For a compilation of this sort I feel they should have added a few more tunes to each disc. This set includes a nice booklet with song lyrics and notes by Roy Harper. But sadly, no track times are given for the individual songs.

This is a great double CD of Roy Harper songs. Again I owe it to my old school friend Adam Dale (circa 1970-yeah I'm an oldie and proud) for telling me about Roy Harper, it just took a long time and a concert in Auckland in the 1980s for the penny to drop that the man is a genius in the best possible sense. Now, the concert had a whole lot of Led Zepplin fans looking a bit put out by Mr Harper's distinct folk bent-although from memory he played some very tasty electric guitar in that solo show. Perhaps he should have sent them home happy with "Stairway to Croydon" but he didn't and that is what makes the man so lovable. On his own track he ploughs taking all before him. Makes Richard Thompson seem positively cuddley. So this is a mix of songs. Self selected and awhile in gestation according to the liner notes. Do they stand up and salute? They do. And early material shows a softer, hippy dippy side. I like the eclectic mix, such as the track with Andy Roberts prog rock like guitar, "The Flycatcher". Buy it and enjoy listening to one of England's greatest singer/songwriters with too much piss and bottle to ever sell out and settle down. Now Adam said buy Stormcock and I still haven't got around to it. Sorry, Adam I will.

I have been a follower of Roy Harper since Folkjokeopus.Great songwriter,Great performer and I've always appreciated his wit. This is a really good follow up to Counter Culture, another great compilation.
A nice selection of cuts from throughout Roy's career, leaning more toward the mellower side of his guitar.(my favorite-Another day, always gives me goose bumps).
Sound qualitys great.A good choice for long term fans and new.
