1.0 out of 5 stars Very weak soundtrack!!
This is a bad soundtrack. I want my money back!! The cover version of Hooked On A Feeling is terrible. It's dreadful. Don't waste your time and money on this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun-filled party from start to finish, June 1, 2000
This review is from: Songs From Ally McBeal Featuring Vonda Shepard (Television Series) (Audio CD)
Those of you obsessed with dancing babies, Fishisms, and being haunted by Al Green will no doubt fall in love with this release, the first volume of the soundtrack to the hit television series "Ally McBeal." Choosing some of the best songs performed by Vonda Shepard during the show's first season, the album has an energy and spirit that are nothing short of irresistible.

Whether she's belting out the likes "It's in His Kiss (The Shoop Shoop Song)" or gently caressing a classic ballad like "You Belong to Me," Vonda Shepard's interpretative skills are in top form here. In the hands of a lesser singer the songs she's handed for each episode could easily sound like a karaoke-fest; however, Vonda's warm vocal personality and obvious affection for the material makes them individual statements in their own right; it's very telling that Vonda's fabulous version of the 60's girl-group hit "Tell Him" gets just as much audience enthusiasm at her concerts as any of her originals.

Speaking of originals, we're treated to the full-length version of the show's theme song, "Searchin My Soul," not to mention an infectious rocker by the name of "Will You Marry Me," boasting one of Vonda's strongest hooks. All in all, whether you've a taste for killer renditions of classic pop tunes or a tasty handful of Vonda Shepard originals, "Songs from Ally McBeal" is a treasure for fans of Ally, Vonda, or music in general.

5.0 out of 5 stars Songs chalk-full of soul, December 14, 1999

This review is from: Songs From Ally McBeal Featuring Vonda Shepard (Television Series) (Audio CD)
This CD is unsurpassable. You don't have to be an Ally Mcbeal fan to enjoy the music. Vonda Shepard recreates some touching oldies with lots of heart and soul. Walk away Renee, Ask the Lonely, The End of the World and Maryland are excellently done. It's mood music- there is a variety of songs to hear when "you're world is empty and blue " and upbeat, lively songs (Tell Him, Hooked on a Feeling) to hear when you're in a joyful state. Its soulful. Vonda's voice calls up your first love, your sad memories, nostalalgia and that's the essence of the music behind this CD. So if you like soul, hear this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Ally et al, February 14, 2000

While her work may not be original, the re-makes of days gone by is second to none. If people would take the time to listen to lyrics, and match them to the characters, the result is a heart rendering tale of a longing for love and acceptance in this world. I do not believe that anyone can not see themselves in the main theme of "Heart and Soul" somewhere in the songs. Outstanding...but you need to listen...and put yourselves there. By putting old songs in the context of the pursuit of happiness they have new meaning. After all....all people are in the pursuit of happiness. Isn't that what life is all about.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best!, November 25, 2000

This review is from: Songs From Ally McBeal Featuring Vonda Shepard (Television Series) (Audio CD)
I bought this CD in 1998, but until today I had not written a review about it. I'm a fan of Ally Mcbeal and this first soundtrack of the show is certainly the best one. Vonda Shepard is a gifted and brilliant singer and I've become her fan as well after I saw her performing in the show. "Searchin my soul", the opening theme, is incredible and good to be listened when you're feeling blue, because you immediatly connect it to calista flockart. "Hooked on a feeling", the 70's hit recorded by Vonda, became more powerful in her voice and even more funny because of ally's dancing baby (only fans will understand). "It's in his kiss" is a very joyfull song and, since Cher first recorded it, no one dared to make another version (I actually appreciate Vonda's). There are also romantic themes in this soundtrack, such as "I only want to be with you", "the end of the world", which makes you think about people who have come and gone in your life.

I must say that I love all the 14 tracks and I really recommend this CD, not only for ally mcbeal's fans, but also for all those people who have a taste for good music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good new stuff and a decent spin on some oldies, November 17, 1999

Vonda Shepard does a very good job here. The new songs on the CD are very good, while the old songs are OK to good. I especially liked her renditions of "Walk Away Renee" and "Its in His Kiss". The original, "Searching My Soul" was excellent. A couple of the songs, however, do fall flat.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Collection of Ally McBeal Songs Ever!, January 10, 2001

This review is from: Songs From Ally McBeal Featuring Vonda Shepard (Television Series) (Audio CD)
Are you an Ally McBeal fan? Like the songs? Well, then you'll love this! Featuring some of my favourite songs by Vonda Shephard including "Searchin' my soul", "Tell him","Renee", "Maryland", and "wildest times". I got hooked on the songs the day I got the cd. I think it's one of the best comedies of all times...it's perfect. Also, It has the FULL version of Vonda Shephard's "Searching my soul tonight" theme song. All the songs have come on the episodes atleast once or twice except "Tell him" which has appeared in many episodes and "Searching my soul tonight" which has come at the beginning of EVERY episode. Overall, considering it's from a TV show- it is a surprise- and it is a pretty good album.

I have just about played this poor disc to death. I just love the entire thing. My favorite though is Vonda's original song "Just Someone You Use". Been there done that and she nails the feelings dead on! I have ordered the new CD and am itching for it to get here! If you buy any CD in the near future, make it anything by Vonda Shepard.

5.0 out of 5 stars The voice of the Soul - Brilliant!!!, November 26, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Songs From Ally McBeal Featuring Vonda Shepard (Television Series) (Audio CD)
I saw the advert after an episode and the next day it was on my CD player. This is a fantastic album, whether or not you have heard of Ally McBeal. The title track "Searching my Soul" has punch and is inspiring. The depth of the words in "Just ask the lonely" may lead you to regret the time you said "no" mercilessly when someone asked you out, but you vow to yourself that you won't do it again. Then again, that depends on the person asking! It does bring on feelings of loneliness to the single person. "Just Walk Away Renee" will always remind me of the Kick Boxing episodes. Good synopsis! "Hooked on a Feeling" is an upbeat song, guaranteed, to put a smile on your face any morning. My favourite would have to be "Tell Him". As for knowing a lot about love, Vonda, I'm afraid to say you may be wrong in this case: Telling a man that would surely scare him away!?!? "In the Wildest Times of the World" is a wishful song. It invokes a feeling of being in a log cabin at Christmas with a man you've admired for ages and have never had the guts to admit.Well, that's what it does for me, anyway. I had vowed to myself that it was a question I would never ask a man and "Will you Marry Me?" does not change my mind. Another upbeat song, it has a catchy tune which is hummable at the most embarrassing moments, especially when you see the man of your dreams!! "The End of the World" is a weepy and my heart goes out to anyone who has just parted from a loved one! Not a bad cover. Speaking of which I actually prefer this version of "Kiss" to that of Cher. Album of 1998? Vonda, you have my vote!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best of Ally McBeal Albums, April 21, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Songs From Ally McBeal Featuring Vonda Shepard (Television Series) (Audio CD)
This album is the first, and also the best of the soundtrack albums from the hit series "Ally McBeal." If you're a show fan, you'll immediately would relate the songs with the scenes from the show, e.g., "Hooked on Feeling" would connect you to the dancing baby, "Tell Him" would remind you of the scene where Ally crossed the road while playing "disco-shoulder" that was immediately followed by the rest of the crowd, etc. And of course, don't forget "Searchin' My Soul," the theme of the show. Vonda Shephard sang all of these songs well, just like she sang them on the show. Overall, a must buy for any Ally fan, especially those who were nostalgic about the time when the show was still the best (first and second seasons) before the producers and writers screw it up into oblivion.
