Alicia is the new queen of RnB,
By Cynthia Selene (Miskolc, Hungary) - See all my reviews

I thought piano belongs to classical music, not to modern R'n'B. I was wrong. This CD is something new and original and Alicia is a true talent. The best songs are the 4 singles, but the others are also worth listening, my favorite non-single tracks are Jane Doe, Butterflyz and Rock Wit U. I'm glad I bought the special edition 'cause this remix of "A Woman's Worth" is so COOL. (A hint: don't turn off your CD player after listening it... wait a few minutes. :)The Cd also contains a weblink to a page where you can find videos and some Alicia stuff.

When's the next CD???,

A great CD! The incredible voice of A Keys shines through in every track and her talent as a piano player is quite evident. Fast beats like "Jane Doe" and "Girlfriend" coupled with slow tracks like "Fallin'" and "Woman's Worth" makes for a CD great to listen to in any mood. My favourite tracks include "Mr. Man" and "Why Do I Feel So Sad".

Soulful Sister Beyond Her Years,

First, let me commend Alicia Keys for having the ability to write her own material and the talent to sing and play the piano better than most others in the music industry. In this industry where everyone seems to just be a product of their record company with no presence or minds of their own, Alicia Keys is a very refreshing change. Her amazing soul comes through every track on her album and anyone can tell that this woman is wise beyond her years. Even now, after her cd has been out for awhile, I love to sit back after a day of work and listen to it because it is very soothing. Those who seem to think her cd is "over-hyped" do not understand the deeper soul behind singers such as Alicia Keys, India Arie, Floetry, and Jill Scott. Being a singer and piano player myself, Alicia Keys is truly an inspiration to me. I look forward to the future of Miss Keys, one of the best things out there.

Is Alicia Keys possibly the best new young artist to hit the urban scene in years? Not really a 'probably' about it, she IS without a doubt, and Songs In A Minor just goes to prove this fact to any and every person who takes the time to listen to it completely. Now I've heard people comment that they "don't see what all the fuss is about" after listening to SIAM and that's because they are a skim listener it's like Jay-Z said in 'Renegade' "Do you fools / Listen to music or / Do you just skim / Through it?"You see any person who realises at 14 Alicia was the focus of a bidding war between some would say the largest and foremost record labels in not just urban music but music full stop. At 15 was signed, at 16 she was working with some of the biggest producers that Sony, her then label could throw at her, and during all this she had a substantial (her manager puts it at least 6 figures) amount of money in the bank is bound to understand that how amazing it is that at 21, yes that's right she is only 21(!) she has stayed true to her music, left her label to join another that would let her create her own music, has her own production company and is writing and producing with, among others, Angie Stone and Christina Augilera. As an artist Alicia exudes the kind of passion through her music that her mentors, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye... would be proud of. Her piano playing gives a new lease of life to an art form that is probably seen by those who move in most urban circles as quite bougie and her vocals at times are quite simply sublime. Come on now Grammy's don't lie and the 5(!) sitting on Alicia's mantel are saying this is an unbelievably good CD. Alicia has so much more to give us that I doubt her next album will even reach the shelves before someone takes it off. Want a prediction? well I guarantee that her sophomore LP will debut #1 in the Billboard charts and will sit there for at least 3 weeks.

Good debut but not Great,

Ms. Keys has what it takes to be really good, but you won't see it on this album though. It is basically an album built around one song - Fallin'. There one or two other songs which will pique your interest but the rest are mediocre at best. But hey give it a shot and go buy it, but I could help it, I'd borrow it from a friend and have a listen first before rushing out to get one.

Alicia Keys "Song in a Minor" was a very well planned and thought out album, she express certain views from the heart but in the long run this album was over rated and the reason why is that out of all her songs, four to five of them you can actually listen to on a regular basis but this album alone was carried along by luck but if she rushes her success on another album it may become a flop like Sisqo's from Dru Hill.

Undeniably, R&B music is not what it once was. With diminutive artists, it's impossible for this sensational genre to leap to its pinnacle, a spot R&B held several years ago. And while R&B's current roster certainly is minuscule, you can expect to have its remaining talent excel, and give R&B an outstanding repute.
What comes to mind when thinking of R&B? Usher, Beyonce' perhaps, or maybe the newer talent; Rihanna, Chris Brown? One name is never forgotten; however, Alicia Keys. What exactly can you expect from this smashing-artists' debut album? An album so esteemed, many refer as it the "revival" of R&B. Today, we have established the highly controversial "Queen of Pop", the "King of Pop", and after a few more albumbs, we can certainly have the crown fixed for our "Queen of R&B"; Alicia Keys.

Refreshment for the world of popular R&B!,

I'd just like to say, "Hell yeah Alicia, I know your name." I know her name and I intend to spread the love! haha. Anyway, more serious matters. My likes and dislikes of the album. We'll do the dislikes first. Well, I really like the traditional blues scales in "Fallin'" so I thought I was in for a new take on an old thing. But, there are some weak tracks on this CD. Like, "Jane Doe" and "Butterflyz" but, no matter how weak they may happen to be, I still love them. I love her genuine talent and diversity in tracks. I say diversity because we go from a 1970s funk in "Rock Wit U" to a hard-knock ballad like "The Life". I also appreciate Alicia Keys' image. Even though it has nothing to do with the music, it helps nonetheless. She almost seems like a good role-model in the music biz. I think it doesn't hurt having a little bit less of brainless blondes flaunting their bodies and more of what music is made for: to express emotions through words that can touch the individual or make the individual think of something in a different light. I think Miss Keys achieves this and I anxiously look forward to her next CD. The songs I especially like on this album are: "Piano & I" "How Come You Don't Call Me" "Troubles" "The Life" "Mr. Man" "Fallin'" and "A Woman's Worth". Hope I helped.
