I Walk The Line

Biography

Beginning his career as an outlaw to the Nashville establishment, Johnny Cash has come to define country music over the last 40 years. At first, his unique mix of hillbilly music with gospel and blues made him a perfect fit at Sam Phillips' Sun records, where he recorded such classics as "Folsom Prison Blues" and "I Walk The Line." From there, Johnny signed with Columbia records and embarked on… Read more in Amazon's Johnny Cash Store

4.0 out of 5 stars Cash gets back to his roots, March 7, 2010
This review is from: Songs of Our Soil (Audio CD)
The premise of Songs of Our Soil is simple - Johnny Cash is singing a collection of old American folk songs, peppered with self-penned numbers in the same style. Don't let the odd paisley-clad Cash on the album cover deter you from buying this; it's a fine album, and an interesting example of an early Cash concept album. Notable tracks include "My Grandfather's Clock" (a traditional classic performed in the true Cash style), "The Man on the Hill," (a Cash original, capturing the sprit of the sharecropper's attitude towards his boss), and "Drink to Me," (a reworking of the traditional "Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes, a song that had special significance to Johnny). This album may be seen as a precursor to the more recent American recordings - it is an effort made by Cash to capture the songs that meant so much to him, and started him on the path towards his illustrious musical career. Listening to this album grants some insight into Johnny's roots, and where he felt his musical loyalties lay.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Cash, Sings Authentic Folk Ballads..., May 18, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Songs of Our Soil (Audio CD)
Imagine Johnny Cash singing Burl Ives folk ballads, "Songs Of Our Soil" is the title of this compilation, actually this is the Cash we all know and grew up with, eleven tracks on here are Cash originals. These songs were recorded off and on throughout 1959, just one year after Johnny signed with Columbia records, "The Fabulous Johnny Cash" was the man in black's debut for Columbia, and what a debut it was, a tremendous milestone for the legend. The songs on "Soil" tell real to life stories of living and dying, Johnny Cash never did waste time getting to the point, firing his powerful baritone voice through the stereo speakers with intense clarity - how high's the water mama, she said it's "Five Feet High And Rising" - three men stranded in the desert, one man dying, crying for water, "Hank And Joe And Me" - everything is sent down from "The Man On The Hill" - Bill Cody is after Wyatt Earp's darling "Clementine" - only time can tell with "My Grandfather's Clock". Songs like these and more simply utter the words, "this is Johnny Cash". Listen for the upbeat sea ventured tale "I Want To Go Home". "Songs Of Our Soil" is a short recording with twelve tracks and two additional bonus tracks, "I Got Stripes", "You Dreamer You". Buy this, it's an important additive for Cash collectors like me, and the price is right. 2002 release, excellent audio. (Would also recommend the UK import "Walk The Line" Sun box set recordings, the sound is superior.)

This is one of my favorite Johnny Cash albums. It is a lesser known title, but the music is fabulous. I great slice of Americana.
