According to the web site associated with these Songs for Persephone, this music was originally written for a music theater piece commissioned by the Brooklyn Academy of Music. It was part of last year's BAM Next Wave Festival. The duo behind this music is Mimi Goese, originally a member of the underrated '80s band Hugo Largo, and "mutantrumpeter" Ben Neill. Together they've created beautiful songs that combine poetic lyrics, marvelous singing, and intriguing electronic backdrops, along with inspired trumpet playing. Ms Goese's singing and songwriting remind me somewhat of Jane Siberry's, before she - Jane - changed her name to "Sheba" and became slightly unmoored. Goese handles both the soft and louder passages of these songs with equal aplomb. The arrangements for the songs are magical, full of shimmering synth sounds and piquant trumpet tones. In all, Songs for Persephonone is an uplifting and pleasurable listening experience.

It should be noted that various limited edition versions of the album are available through the artists' site, including ones that are customized for the recipient! The limited editions provide access to additional bonus instrumental tracks (which are also quite good).

These songs string together so nicely...you can tell they worked well as the "soundtrack" of a play. After just a couple plays of this CD it's very easy to find one of the songs playing in your head. It's not like that pop song you want to get out of your head, though. It's enchanting and makes you want to hear the song again. Ben's trumpet and Mimi's voice work so well together.

If this is your first exposure to these artists, also hear the tracks from Mimi's album called "Soak." The "Fire and Roses" track from that album is one of my favorite songs ever.

There are three aspects to this album. One is Mimi's vocals, another is Ben's music and the last is the combination of the two. I'm not going to write endless paragraphs so we'll get down to the proverbial brass tacks. Mimi's has a lovely, clear, expressive voice and (thankfully to me) she just sings, she doesn't try to screw with the melody by loading it down with all those vocal decorations and tricks that every pop singer is so fond of. frankly, i'm sick of listening to singers take a one or two syllable word and drag it out over 14 seconds and 12 measures to show off what they can do. (of course, a lot of pop songs are stupid and have nothing interesting to say; these songs have interesting lyrics). So thank you MIMI for singing the melody and doing it so wonderfully - the vocals are intimate and fit with what's going on around them. Next, Ben's music. Ben has managed the neat trick of balancing intricate arrangements with simplicity. His textures are solid and deep without being ponderous; the rhythms/beats are simple without being moronic - they underpin and compliment the rest of the music without being rigid; the musical ideas sound fresh and expressive without being show-offy. This is thoughtful stuff with instrumentation and sonic ideas that vary from track to track but still maintain a thematic feel throughout the album. So, the combination of Mimi and Ben produces an album which is, honestly, one of the best things i've heard in a long time. if you need a reference point for that, here it is: i've been a musician (performing and playing for $$) since i was 13. i remember when the Beatles first came to America, i saw people like Thelonious Monk and Sun Ra when they were still fresh and listen to a lot of classical music (unknown as well as known).Read more ›
