Editorial Reviews

After a recording career spanning more than fifty years of classical performances, Placido Domingo fulfills his wish to record an album of famous songs that accompanied his life. The Maestro himself chose the repertoire on SONGS, his first pop album in over twenty years, paying tribute to some of the greatest songwriters and including some of the world's most popular songs from the past seventy years. For this long-awaited new album,Domingo invited world-renowned artists and highly talented newcomers to join him for duets including Josh Groban, Harry Connick, jr., Susan Boyle,Chris Botti, Megan Hilty and Katherine Jenkins. Particulary close to his heart is the duet with his son, Placido Domingo, Jr., on "What a Wonderful World."

Placido Domingo really needs no introduction; his talent is well known to the world and on this album he sings beautifully as always--and in more than just one language! This may be Placido Domingo's first pop album in more than two decades; but he sounds very much at home singing these songs both solo and with some of the best vocalists around including Harry Connick Jr.; Katherine Jenkins; Zaz; Chris Botti and Megan Hilty. I particularly like the interpretations of these fine popular songs and ballads; and the duets on this CD are exquisite. The sound quality is excellent and even the artwork is nicely done.

There's not a bad track in the lot here; and that's grand. "Canción Para Una Reina (Song for a Queen)" features Placido Domingo singing this passionately and it makes a great start for the album. "Sous le Ciel de Paris (Under the Skies of Paris)" is easy on the ear when Placido and Josh Groban sing it; and "Time After Time" charms me with its beauty; I love it! "Un Uomo Tra la Folla (A Man in the Crowd)" gets the royal treatment from Placido who sings this with so much heart and soul; and the Jacques Brel classic "La Chanson des Vieux Amants (The Song of Old Lovers)" is equally well done.

"Come What May" from the movie "Moulin Rouge" is another gem; and Domingo's treatment of "Bésame Mucho" is clearly one of the best I've ever heard. "From This Moment On" has an exceptional musical arrangement and this is one of my favorite duets on this album; Susan Boyle and Placido Domingo do a great job on "From This Moment On." "Parla Più Piano" which was used as "The Love Theme" from "The Godfather" is absolutely splendid and "Il Mio Cuore Va - My Heart Will Go On" from "Titanic" couldn't have been done any better.

Placido Domingo is a contemporary phenomenon. Now at 71 not only is he among the greatest tenors that ever lived, he also has managed to age gracefully, allowing his performances on the opera stage to mature with his voice: the tenor has become the baritone and still stuns audiences with his performances of new roles for the baritone voice. In addition to that he is now an opera conductor, the administrator of Los Angeles Opera, a humanitarian in his giving of himself and his money to aid victims of natural tragedies, a champion of new music, a supporter of new talent through his Operalia, and still is able to have enough joy to sing the opening salvo for sports events and television appearances. He is a warmly human presence in the world and here he shares that enthusiasm for life and for his fellowmen with a series of popular songs for the people.

The album could comfortably be called Domingo and Friends as he has invited some popular singers to join him in this tribute to popular music. Among those with whom he sings duets are Josh Groban on `Sous le Ciel de Paris', Susan Boyle on `From this Moment on', his son Placido Domingo, Jr on `What a wonderful World', and others with Harry Connick, Jr., Chris Botti, Katherine Jenkins, Zaz, and Megan Hilty. There is something about Domingo's presence that raises the bar for performance with these popular singers!

Many of the songs are from the movies - `Eternally' for `Limelight', `Come What May' from Moulin Rouge', `Parla più piano' from `The Godfather', `My Heart Will Go On' from `Titanic', the Jacques Brel classic `Chanson des vieux amants' - while the rest are in several languages and are standards in the repertoire of popular songs, such as `Bésame mucho' `Jalousie', `The Girl from Ipanema' and more.

Definitely worth every cent. Great selection of songs and popular singers. This CD really captures the beauty of his voice. As mentioned by other reviewers, the duet with his son is so beautiful. I look forward to Plácido Junior's release of his own CD. Eternally, From this Moment On and What a wonderful World have always been some of my favourites so it is great to hear the King of Opera sing these songs . Besame Mucho is sung in Spanish so A++++ since I already have English versions. To all the people who frown on him singing popular music - it would have been a shame not to have such an amazing voice sing such beautiful music.

This morning I downloaded from Amazon the mp3 album. This album is an opportunity to hear popular non-operatic classics performed by one of the greatest voices of our time. Therefore, it will appeal to Domingo's opera fans as well as non-opera music lovers.

I particularly like that there are songs in different languages. I think this adds a lot of interest to the album, as does the mix of solos and duets with some of the great popular and cc singers of today.

Of the solos, I especially like Besame Mucho and The Girl From Ipanema.
Of the duets, my favorites are Sous le Ciel de Paris with Josh Groban, From This Moment On with Susan Boyle, who sounds quite amazing, and What a Wonderful World with Placido Domingo Jr. - what a beautiful blend of voices of father and son.

Altogether a great album to have in any music collection.
