Amazon.com Review

In this intriguing eco-mystery, debut author Hilari Bell imagines a watery future where humans have moved into the sea after a devastating crop virus has rendered most earth-grown food inedible. Imina lives in one of the many underwater habitats, but isn't terribly impressed with all the biotechnology that surrounds her. She believes in the power of magic, a conviction inherited from her great-grandmother, an Inuit shaman. Frustrated by the habitat's intolerance of anything that can't be proven scientifically, Imina concentrates on furthering her magic abilities independently. However, her work is interrupted by a mysterious someone who appears to sabotaging the habitat.

Using her still immature talents, Imina determines that the saboteur is a maker of magic. Both exhilarated and terrified, Imina tries to ascertain the identity of the saboteur through magic and scientific means, with the help of Ivan, a serious young biologist with feet of clay, and Dr. Pennyfeather, an absent-minded, kindly physician. When the destructive source is finally discovered, the scientists of the community must put aside their disbelief in the supernatural and trust Imina to bargain with the enigmatic magic makers not only for their lives but to ensure the continuation of the human race.

Despite somewhat stereotypical characterization (Imina as a New Age Nancy Drew, Dr. Pennyfeather as the forgetful professor), Bell's captivating plot builds to an incredibly satisfying climax that raises the age-old question of whether the supernatural and science can ever be reconciled. Songs of Power is a worthy addition to the new group of futuristic millennial teen reads that include Kathryn Lasky's Star Split and Margaret Peterson Haddix's Among the Hidden. (Ages 11 to 14) --Jennifer Hubert

From Publishers Weekly

In her first novel, Bell creates an imaginative but flawed adventure set in an underwater habitat at an unspecified future time (one reference implies that the year 2020 was some time ago). The habitat is involved in a "sea farming" project; a terrorist group created a virus that is destroying the food supply on land, and soon the entire world will need to be fed from the sea. Imina, raised to be a shaman by her Inuit great-grandmother, is far outnumbered by "technocrats," who only rely on science. When the habitat's equipment begins to fail, the leaders suspect the terrorists, but Imina is convinced magic is at work. Bell's depiction of life in the habitat and her feisty main character, Imina, make for a suspenseful read. However, the development of characters and their relationships to one another takes a backseat to the plotting here, and some readers may be dubious as to why two of Imina's "technocrat" classmates would come to her aid. Bell develops plot points that go nowhere, such as the description of a fish that inexplicably follows Imina everywhere she goes, and wraps up her story too neatly. Ages 10-up. (May)

More About the Author

Me the writer--a loose, not-really-biography of Hilari Bell.

A lot of writers will tell you that they've been writers from the time they were children--well, I'm not one of those people. I was always a reader. There's nothing better than falling into the world of a book and just living there till the story's over...and even then, it stays in your head and heart. At least, the best ones do. But writing came a lot later, in school assignments--which I enjoyed, but still, assignments. Homework no less.

I started writing seriously when I first got out of library school. I'd been reading picture books preparing to do storytimes, and I thought, "Picture books. They're short. They're for little kids. How hard could it be?" Several years and dozens of unsold--and unsalable--picture books later I'd found out how hard they could be! Picture books are harder to write (a good one, anyway) than anything except poetry. And they're harder to sell than anything but poetry, too.

One of the things I've learned about writing over the years is to never say never, because whenever I've said "I will never write XYZ" within a few years I end up writing it. Some true examples: I could never write a novel. I could never write a young adult novel. I could never write science fiction. I could never write an adult novel. I could never make those books a romance. (OK, so I haven't actually made them into a romance, but a lot more romantic elements are creeping into my writing.) I should probably say, I could never write a best seller, just to see what would happen... Hmm. I could never write a best seller!

OK, Murphy's Law being what it is, that probably won't work. If for no other reason than that, primarily, I write for me. This is something I probably shouldn't admit, but I don't really care that much about my audience. (Sorry, audience.) I write the books I want to read. I tell the stories that I want to tell. And I write to make the story the best it can be...because the story is what I care about it. I love it when other people care about my stories too, but that's not my primary motivation. Which is the other reason "I could never write a best seller."

(I know it probably won't work--but it doesn't hurt to try, now does it?)

--Hilari

5.0 out of 5 stars I Couldn't put it down!, May 29, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Songs of Power (Hardcover)
The book Songs of Power is a great book. It is about a girl named Annis. Annis an her family live in an undersea habitat. Annis comes from a Inuit tribe, and wants to be a shaman. Her great grandmother was teaching her magic, but now she is dead. Annis is trying to learn magic on her own. Almost everyone that lives in the habitat is a scientist and doesn't believe in magic, so Annis can not tell anyone her secret. One day, she is practicing her magic, when she senses someone else in the habitat that is also using magic. She starts searching for the magic maker, in hopes that he or she can teach her magic. Then bad things start happening to the habitat and Annis has to figure out who is doing it. This book is a great mix of fantasy, mystery, and science fiction. It takes place in the future and is very different from other fantasy books if you ask me. It's kind of confusing at the beginning, and in some parts later on, but you can still understand what is going on. They use some confusing scientific words, but if you ignore those, it doesn't make much difference. I really recommend this book to any one who likes fantasy and suspense. I love fantasy, so I enjoyed this very much. It was so full of suspense, I couldn't put it down. I don't want to ruin it for you, so I'll stop writing now. Enjoy!

I never thought I liked science fiction until I read Songs of Power. This book had me reading until 2 a.m. once; I couldn't put it down!!! Songs of Power is packed with tense action scenes and I think it is best suited for teenagers, because sometimes it is a little hard to understand. READ THIS BOOK!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Book, October 8, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Songs of Power (Hardcover)
Songs of Power is a great mystery book. If you like adventure, then you will love this book. It is about a girl named Imina who lives in one of many underwater habitats. She must learn to deal with the fact that the world is now a harmful place. A group of people have made things above water so that food is poisonous. Because of that fact, people have moved to living underwater. Everyone around Imina is somehow working with science and she only believes the fact that her dead grandmother was a magical shaman. She has not yet learned that there is someone with magic underwater. Until things start to destroy her habitat, Imina has no idea what is going on at the time. She will go on an adventure that will change her and the world. I give this book five stars because this book makes you want to keep turning pages. I just couldn't put it down. Songs of Power, by Hilari Bell is a great book.
