K UpFifteen of the most familiar hymns from ``Amazing Grace'' and ``Jesus Loves Me'' through ``Faith of Our Fathers'' and the Doxology are presented in simplified arrangements scored for piano and guitar and lower in pitch and easier to play than the stan dard hymn book versions. Each hymn is preceded by a brief historical note, and a short introduction evaluates its purpose and appeal. The music is su perimposed upon double-page water color and gouache pictures portraying seasonal activities. Although the hymns range in period from the 16th through the 19th Centuries and in origin from England, America, Germany, and Holland, Hewitt patterns her illustra tions after various late Middle Age Books of Hours, the most famous of which is French. Thus she does not bind herself to any period or location and even uses anachronisms such as black families living in the villages and poinsettias decorating the section on winter. Teachers and librarians looking for historical accuracy will not find it here. Instead, Hewitt presents an ideal ized ``Peaceable Kingdom'' type of in terpretation in which she creates a rosy vision of prosperous country life through warm, satisfying colors. Each season is closed with a page showing its flowers, fruits, insects, birds, vegeta bles, and other symbols. These are not limited geographically or temporally, and would be familiar to most Ameri can children. The beauty and fascina tion of the pictures and the clear, ele gant typography make this a visual treat rare in hymn books.Patricia Pearl, First Presbyterian School, Martins ville, Va.
