This album is almost the same as the earlier, independent release, with a few different songs. Somehow, it's even better. Although "Whiskey and Wine" is missed, the album has better flow and quality throughout. Costa has a diverse style that is interlaces with adolescent optimism and energy - and that's adolescent in the best of ways - when every new experience was still exciting.

Best album I bought last year,

I bought dozens and dozens of CDs last year and Costa's Songs We Sing was my favorite acquisition. If you're enjoying that trendy, troubadour sound of barefoot, pensive guys strumming their accoustic guitars to licks that hook you, this is as upbeat, clear, and good-mood-provoking as they come. A friend and peer of Jack Johnson's, Costa is coming into his own a bit less produced (very welcome, indeed!). His melodies stick with you. I'm looking forward to more great stuff from Costa.

Matt Costa riecently toured with Jack Johnson, but when placed by side by side, Matt Costa has a unique sound from Jack. He spans the whole gammit of sounds with in the acoustic guitar genre. Each song is diverse from the last, and his influences clearly range from, the Beatles to Elliot Smith to Bob Dylan. This is an album that is a must have. Costa is putting out tons of material most notably his newest EP, which can be ordered on his websight [...]. It is incredible with all new tracks from the recordings of the "Songs We Sing" album. It proves that Costa is an incredible song writer, and hopefully is here to stay!

I happened upon Cold December and bought Songs We Sing. I can't stop listening to it! I love (and know by heart) every song. All my friends are getting this album for Christmas, and I think I want to marry Matt Costa ;)I would try to compare to other groups/artists - but really it is too original (unlike the vibe you get from the Amazon review) and this album deserves an objective listen - just get it!

Matt Costa's "Songs We Sing" is really a pleasant surprise! I found Matt from his work on Jack Johnson's "Curious George" soundtrack.Matt Costa reminds me a bit of Jack Johnson in terms of the sparse instrumentation. He has a good, easy-to-listen-to singing voice. The songs are simple and very catchy. You'll be singing the choruses by halfway through each song. Obviously, if you're into Jack Johnson, this is a good pickup. But to me, this album sounds like it could be from a soundtrack to the next Wes Anderson film; it could easily fit onto the Rushmore, The Life Aquatic, and The Royal Tenenbaums soundtracks. It has that sort of "real" feel to it. Very highly recommended.

Songs you will sing,

Like G. Love and ALO, Matt Costa belongs to a select group of artists that can call themselves musical friends of Jack Johnson. You get that same positive feeling when you listen to this first full Matt Costa album (not an E.P.) as when you listen to Jack Johnson. But Matt Costa is more diverse. A song like Whiskey and Wine is not a song that Jack Johnson would have made. You could say they went to the same school but they got their own styles after graduation. My personal favourite is Astair. Shimmering Fields is a close second. Other highlights are Yellow Taxi, Sunshine and the title-track Songs We Sing. And because it's an album that is so fresh, open and pleasent to listen to you will listen to it a lot when in doubt what to play. The result is that you'll end up singing these songs (along).

One of my new favorite CD's,
This review is from: Songs We Sing (Audio CD)
I had never heard of Matt Costa before I heard him open for Jack Johnson in September. I'm usually not one to love the opening acts, but I really liked the sound of Matt. I ordered this CD within the week and absolutely fell in love with it. The sound is a lot like Jack. I've introduced it to several of my friends that also loved it. Over a month later, and still listening to it very often. A must have CD for your collection!!!

Amazing CD,

I don't understand how people are comparing Matt Costa's music to Jacks. Both are great in there own right, but I don't see much of a similarity. I think Jack is more bluesy and has his whole on the beach watching the sunset vibe. Whereas Matt comes off as more of a singer/songwriter with more diverse influences. That's just my take on it...Neway, Songs We Sing combines an array of different sounds such as country, folk and rock. Each song seems to be influenced from a certain band or type of music, which is great to hear. For example, "Oh Dear" could pass for a modern Beatles song. I find Matt to be very likable and his excellent song writing skills and smooth vocals back it up. His lyrics are great too; they explain the obvious hardships of relationships without saying it outright. Instead he uses metaphores and clever stories to relay the message. My favorites include Cold December, Yellow Taxi and Sunshine. Great CD all the way through. Highly reccomended for anyone who enjoys mellow acoustic sounds.

This is really a great cd. It's upbeat & fun but the songs are well written at the sametime. My favorite song on the album is Whisky & Wine. This cd is for anyone who is into Jack Johnson, Donavon Frankenreiter, Ben Harper, etc...

We saw this performer's profile in an Indi Music magazine and thought we'd try him out. We now love him! There is so much variety in his style, everyone can find something they like.
