5.0 out of 5 stars Music for people with an emotional attention-span, January 4, 2000
By
Tony Lash (Portland, Oregon) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Songs for Three Days (Audio CD)
My name is Tony Lash, and I am the producer/arranger of "songs for 'three days.'" I have worked on a lot of records, but this one is by far my personal favorite. It's difficult to sum up briefly, but let me say that the quality of Kaitlyn's music I tried hardest to bring to the fore is its emotional honesty. Kaitlyn's songs explore a wide array of moods and feelings, many of them dark. Our goal with this record was to bring these feelings directly to the listener without ever being sappy, overdramatic or manipulative. "songs for 'three days'" begs more attentive listening to reveal itself than your average pop record. The music is emotionally direct, but it is never obvious or trite. If I had to draw comparisons I would say we (Kaitlyn on the writing side, I on the production side) were influenced by Lisa Germano, Talk Talk, Ravel, Satie, Antonio Carlos Jobim, traditional Irish music, Cocteau Twins and the less dramatic side of Kate Bush. It's a strange mix I know, but hopefully you will find much in it that moves you.

5.0 out of 5 stars soundtrack for life, April 19, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Songs for Three Days (Audio CD)
Songs for 'three days' could be a sound track for life. Innocently it envelops you and matures. The first track (aegis) is soulful and simple with lulling voice and strumming on guitar. A calm introduction to an album that progresses with unexpected twists of sorrow and joy. Lush and intimate soundscapes swell with hope and dark humor. This CD a constant in my player especially on nights of quiet introspection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eerily gorgeous, January 16, 2002

This is an absolutely stunning album. Its principal achievement, I feel, is the way in which it very insinuatingly and gracefully creates a kind of total atmosphere of sound, and how that atmosphere comes to envelop you, and suggest moods. The music reminds me very much of a Diane Arbus photograph, for instance. Both gorgeous and eerie--eerily gorgeous--at the same time. There is something deeply sad about it, but the sadness becomes liberating and even reassuring. I can't listen to it enough.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hauntingly beautiful a true work of art!, November 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Songs for Three Days (Audio CD)
Kaitlyn ni Donovan's Cd, Songs For 'Three Days' echos of impressionistic classical music, jazz Celtic and pop. Every track held attention. I was constantly suprised at the diversness and fluidity of the music. Lots of stringed instruments, oddest being ukulele create a delicate backdrop for the CD. I'd compare ni Donovan's vocals a bit of Enya mixed with Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins and Suzanne Vega. Lacking a lyric sheet, the lyrics I could make out seemed enigmatic and personal. Excellent introspective bedtime or reading music. Kaitlyn ni Donovan's Songs for 'Three Days' could have mass appeal if it weren't too painfully an original rare find.

5.0 out of 5 stars A cd that sits with your favorite book or painting., September 22, 2002

I cannot say enough about this cd. It is frightningly dark, rich in achievement in that it hypnotizes and takes you away much like your favorite novel or work of art. It has the intensity of a crime scene photo mixed with hope and innocence. Lush string instruments intertwine, her angelic poetic voice and rollercoaster mix of styles(folk, celtic jazz, pop?classical etc)make you wonder if you come upon some secret artist that has been hidden. The lyrics are literary minded never cliche but hard to understand. That is my only gripe besides wanting to buy more!

5.0 out of 5 stars Atmosphere in spades, May 10, 2002

I first saw Kaitlyn Ni Donovan when she played guitar with the Portland band High Violets. I then got turned on to Songs for Three Days. After many, many times listening, I can sum it up by saying the music on this CD is mesmerizing. I recommend listening to it all the way through in one sitting for maximum effect. The atmospheric arc that is covered from the beginning of the CD to the end is what's most remarkable. In a subtle way, many moods are evoked.
Katilyn Ni Donovan's voice is bell-clear, pitch-perfect and quite sexy in understated way. And that's not even mentioning her skill as an instrumentalist. She plays both the violin and the guitar with confidence and no shortage of skill.
You cannot go wrong with this CD. I look forward to Kaitlyn's next effort.

5.0 out of 5 stars water for barren, dry land, June 25, 2001
By
This review is from: Songs for Three Days (Audio CD)
Kaitlyn returns something of life to a landscape that has become overwrought with striving and copying. There is no striving in this record. Just the pure nature of a person who was born to write and sing music. To say it is rare would be a disgraceful understatement. It is the most precious of gems. It would be a crime for not every person to have the opportunity to hear this gift of music.
