Format: Audio CD
Carter Stanley (who died of complications of cirrhosis in 1966, aged 41) and his younger brother Ralph (born 1927 and still alive as I write this review) were inspired by the music of Bill Monroe to perform their own bluegrass music, writing some of their own songs and covering other songs too. At one point early in their career, they were obliged to suspend their musical careers for financial reasons, working instead for Ford in Detroit. By day they made the cars, but perhaps they saved whatever they could so that could play music again.

One of their recordings, Angel band, ended up on the soundtrack of O Brother, Where Art Thou?, and I suspect that more than a few people have investigated their music because of that. I bought and reviewed that soundtrack some years ago, as well as some of Ralph's solo music that he recorded (and continues to record) since Carter's death.

This compilation includes Angel band, as well as I'm a man of constant sorrow, Rank stranger, Ridin' that midnight train. plus covers of Blue moon of Kentucky, Pretty Polly and Orange blossom special. There is also a very sad song, No school bus in heaven, about a bus crash.

While by no means comprehensive, this offers a good selection of Stanley Brothers music, and would probably be enough for most people. It won't be enough for me, but it's a good start.
