Wonderful Traversal of the "Songs of Travel",

Outstanding style and interpretation of the Vaughan William cycle, though in terms of naturalness of expression, John Shirley-Quirk in wonderful voice with Viola Tunnerd (Saga) remain unsurpassed. Their final coming to rest of the sixth song, "The Infinite Shining Heaven" remains hauntingly etched in my mind. Mr. Finley and Mr. Ralls also bring intelligence and a keen understanding to bear on the Songs of Travel that allows every nuance in melody, texture or mood to unfold spontaneously. Even people who know this music intimately cannot be failed to be moved by it. This is to be preferred over the DG recording. The Britten arrangements likewise are brought to life with a mix of simplicity and sophistication which is contributed to by the well played and paced accompaniments. The voice is something to marvel at too- truly beautiful and full throughout it's range. For a yummy taste, sample "Let Beauty Awake" and you'll be won over by the music's charms.

This is one of the 5 best recital CDs EVER made. Nice long phrases, perfect intonation, perfect diction, and a sexy virile voice. Stop reading this review and buy the CD.

It was a good reference for the songs I was going to do for my jr. recital. Personally, I think Gerald Finley's voice is too heavy for my taste, especially for the Songs of Travel cycle.
