This review is from: Joy Songs, Trumpet Blasts, And Hallelujah Shouts (Perfect Paperback)
Dr. Carlyle Fielding Stewart, III, offers both a didactic lesson on the nature of Black preaching (the first four chapters) and an illustrative smorgasbord of delightful sermonic samples of Black preaching (the final fourteen chapters). For non-Blacks unfamiliar with the nature of Black preaching, the first four chapters succinctly outline and explain the "four corners of the Black preaching universe": poetic recitation, imaginative insight, spiritual pharmacology, and spiritual/social transformation. Each of these are illustrated in the subsequent fourteen sermons which offer wonderful tastes of modern Black sermonizing.
This wonderful little book would have been enhanced with brief introductory comments about each sermon. When was it preached? Which of the four elements are highlighted and how? Of course, without these, the reader enjoys the journey of discovery. Reviewer: Dr. Robert W. Kellemen is the author of "Beyond the Suffering: Embracing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction." He has also authored "Soul Physicians" and "Spiritual Friends." |
