Biography

2000 is (not) the year of NOFX! But don't listen to the hype; listen to the record. Pump Up The Valuum is more clever, more irreverent and more crude than NOFX has ever been: and hot on the heels of the unprecedented The Decline, an amazing 18 minute punk-a-thon, NOFX come slamming back with 14 instant classics (in about 32 minutes).

Pump Up The Valuum combines some of NOFX's most outrageous (and… Read more in Amazon's NOFX Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Not good enough to go on there other records?, February 6, 2003
This review is from: 45 or 46 Songs That Weren't Good Enough to Go on Our Other Records (Audio CD)
If these are what they call 'not good enough' then what is? Some of these songs are great (and some of them are actually on o'Pump Up The Valuum' aren't they). Don't let the title scare you away because this is a great cd, definitely worth buying.

5.0 out of 5 stars NOFX at one of their highest points!, May 26, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: 45 or 46 Songs That Weren't Good Enough to Go on Our Other Records (Audio CD)
I have not been a NOFX fan for very long but I already own most of their albums because I get so glued to each album and want to buy more. I would describe NOFX's music as hard/fast/melodic punk or ska (even some reggae).
If you are just starting to listen to NOFX then I would suggest you buy their albums in this order:
1. 'Punk In Drublic'
2. 'White Trash Two Heebs And A Bean'
3. 'So Long And Thanks For All The Shoes'
4. 'Pump Up The Valuum'
5. 'Heavy Petting Zoo'
6. '45 Or 46 Songs....'
7. 'War On Errorism'
Any albums below 1992, you should get after hearing these albums first as they might sound a bit sloppy.

Anyway, back to the album... It consists of 2 discs which have songs that have been taken from rare EP's. Some may say disc 1 is better but I think they're both excellent.
Here are my favourite tracks off each disc:

DISC 1

PIMPS AND HOOKERS- Excellent new track. 10/10
ALL OF ME- Good bass intro by Fat Mike. 9/10
DRUGS ARE GOOD- Great catchy song. Would be a good influence to play for young kids... 10/10
FORMING- A short cover of a Germ's song. 9/10
ELECTRICITY- A great fast punk song. 10/10
LAZY- Ska. Ska. And erm... Ska --- at it's best. One of my favourite ska NOFX songs. Very catchy. 10/10
TIMMY THE TURTLE- Not Fat Mike singing but a catchy daft song. 10/10
PUNK SONG- An old poor sound quality song. Still great. 9/10
LAST CARESS- Amazing! Even sounds better than the original Misfits version! Now that must be good! 10/10

PUMP UP THE VALUUM- Probably the best song on the album! Very catchy, fast, aggressive punk song. Eric Melvin is at his best in the verses. 10/10
EAT THE MEEK- A reggae/ska song. Sounds Jamaican... You won't get this song out of your head for days! 10/10

DISC 2

FUN THINGS TO F***- Fast and catchy. 10/10
THREE ON SPEED- Amazing. 10/10
NEW HAPPY BIRTHDAY SONG?- Excellent. 9/10
PARTY ENEMA- Catchy. Quite poppy. One of the best. 10/10
WHOA ON THE WHOA'S- Good. 9/10
I GOTTE PEE- Ok... Strange. Funny. Fast. Eric. A good 30 seconds. 9/10
MY NAMES BUD- Good. Fat Mike is now called Bud.....9/10
MURDER THE GOVERNMENT- Catchy. Melodic. 10/10
STRANGER THAN FISHIN- Superb! Catchy (how many times do I have to say this!!) Funny. Immature. 10/10

As you can see, I like half of the tracks on the 2 discs and I'm running out of words to describe how good they are. On disc 1, there is a hidden track which was recorded in 1984 when they were 16 (pretty poor song). The total length of disc 2 is only about 22 minutes and there is 25 songs so it is very short (be warned).

Anyway, if you enjoy music by Bad Religion, Rancid or Pennywise, you will no doubt love this album. Some people say, "new NOFX is rubbish and only for wannabes who pretend to like them"... they are WRONG. Do not listen to them... NOFX's newer stuff is just as good as they're older stuff.

MUSIC: 10/10... The music is excellent quality even on the older songs. NOFX do have the talent.
LYRICS: 9/10... Maybe a bit cheesy and definitely immature but it's NOFX --- thats what you get!
BOOKLET: 10/10... Now you've probably read reviews about how great the booklet is, and they are totally right. The booklet has the lyrics, date and description of each song on the 1st disc. It also has some scribbly lyrics for disc 2 as well. There are a few pages of stuff about the albums that Fat Mike has written. Plus--- there is also loads of cool pictures through-out the whole 32 page (approx) booklet and some joke fan mail on the back. Simply amazing!
OVERALL TOTAL: A definite 10/10! 100% recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars From the beginning to where they are today, July 13, 2002

This review is from: 45 or 46 Songs That Weren't Good Enough to Go on Our Other Records (Audio CD)
Mike continually says in the booklet that accompanies this 2-CD set that this is the stuff that he didn't think was good enough to go on a "real" album. But this is a great CD set. Short to the point songs just like you'd expect from NoFX. Many of these songs have been used on other compilations, such as the Punk-O-Rama series or on the multiple 7" put out by Fat, so they might not all be new songs to the die hard fans. But it it definitely nice to have them all condensed to two CDs, and as Fat Mike says in the book, it's a lot better than having the needle of the record player lift off before the song is over. Any NoFX fan must buy this album, there is no choice in the matter.
