Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The Metropolitan Museum of Art continues the fine tradition established in its previous anthologies of songs ( Go In and Out the Window ; We Wish You a Merry Christmas ). This spirited salute to the American West teams favorite melodies such as "I Ride an Old Paint," "Sweet Betsy from Pike," "Git Along, Little Dogies" and what has been called the cowboy national anthem--"Home on the Range"--with such artistic luminaries as Albert Bierstadt, Frederic Remington and N. C. Wyeth, as well as photographs of frontier memorabilia. Axelrod packs cowboy lore, historical nuggets and astute social commentary into the text that accompanies each song, touching on subjects as varied as chuck wagons, Annie Oakley and the exploitation of immigrant labor in the building of the transcontinental railroad. An index of titles and first lines is included, as well as guitar chord diagrams. Readers from Abilene to Dodge City--even those who can't carry a tune--will want this one for their Americana collections. All ages.

From School Library Journal

Grade 3 Up-- A handsome collection of songs and paintings about cowboys, pioneers, bad men, and heroes. Double-page spreads include songs from the lively ``Old Dan Tucker'' to the cattle lullaby, ``The Night-Herding Song'' and reproductions of paintings by artists such as Frederic Remington, Winslow Homer, George Catlin, W. H. D. Koerner, and a host of others. Accompanying the songs, which are geared to beginning and intermediate musicians, is a commentary relating the music and/or paintings to life in the Old West as well as smaller reproductions of sculptures and artifacts from chewing-gum cards to cowboy boots. A book that is a pleasure both as a practical songbook and as an exciting visual bit of Americana. --Ann Stell, The Smithtown Library, NY

5.0 out of 5 stars Art book with songs, June 19, 2000

This review is from: Songs of the Wild West (Hardcover)
"Songs of the Wild West" contains beautiful color reproductions of paintings from the Metropolitan Museum of Art illustrated with (mostly) authentic cowboy songs. As a song book, there are many collections that are more complete with more verses, often from more original sources. No matter: Go for the art collection first - it's just as enjoyable without the songs. For the musician, this is a good introduction to an important part of our American heritage and, if the songs peak your interest, there are many other folk song collections and recordings available for you to pursue. These songs and arrangements are for voice with simple piano with guitar cord accompaniment. Two minor quibbles: 1) Occasionally, one has to turn a page to see the rest of a song - annoying if you are trying to play it (another indication that the art work is the primary focus). The glossy paper stock does not like this kind of page turning. 2) If it is an art book, it would have been nice to have it available in a larger format so that one could enjoy greater detail in the paintings (on the other hand, the smaller format makes the price more affordable). "Songs of the Wild West" is a valuable addition to the 'Americana' section in any personal or school library. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars A reat music and art book, May 10, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Songs of the Wild West (Hardcover)
I love this book so much I've given it as a gift to friends. It has relatively simple piano arrangements of old cowboy folk songs, but they are still very beautiful. Accompanying the songs are pictures from the Metropolitan Museum of Art from the old West. The pictures are enjoyable even if you don't know music. Too bad the book is out of print.
