With bestseller A.C. Crispin, Norton has woven an eternal love story, filled with magic and wonder. Songsmith is the novel that Witch World fans have been waiting for--a shining jewel in the Witch World cosmos.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The further history of the Witchworld--set almost two generations after the Kolder War--is brought vividly to life by Nebula Grand Master Norton and Crispin (the Starbridge series) in their second collaboration, after Gryphon's Eyrie . Young songsmith Eydryth of Kar Garudwyn ranges far from her home of Arvon, beyond the Dales, seeking help for her brain-damaged father. but she is rebuffed by the witches of Estcarp for daring to seek aid for a man. Alon, a young horseman mounted on a much-feared Keplian steed, becomes Eydryth's ally, leading her to Escore and its healing lady. When angry witches pursue the pair,, Alon reveals himself an Adept who has forsworn his psychic Power because it caused his dearest friend's death. Still to come is much greater danger, as a maddened and newly powerful witch seeks to destroy any man using the Power that the witches barred to the masculine sex. The authors have carefully refurbished Witchworld, rebuilding its glories (and its terrors) and setting the stage for adventures to come.

From School Library Journal

YA-- Norton and Crispin's new novel of the Witch World stands alone. ``There are times,'' says the prologue, ``when the music and the tale are worth it all,'' and this is definitely such a time. This well-told quest, complete with spells, magic, love interest, a strong female protagonist, and even a loved mother/wife to be rescued from a deep sleep ``within the stone that is not-stone,'' may expand the audience for fantasy. Newcomers to the genre will welcome the fast-paced, single-threaded plot. Leisure readers are sure to keep this in constant circulation, and it can be used for the study of fantasy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tie up those loose ends, December 7, 1999
This review is from: Songsmith (Witch World Novels (Paperback Tor)) (Mass Market Paperback)
In this book Andre Norton has begun tying together most of her important Witch World families. I really enjoyed watching the songsmith work her way from one part of the world to the other. She picks up a horse-racing ringer and barely excapes with him from a mob who felt that they were cheated. (Imagine that!) There is a wise woman gone to the bad who wanted to drain the racer's power, Garth Howell is on the prowl, and assorted other badies. All comes right in the end though, (I like good endings) the songsmith triumphs over all of these obstacles, finds the cure for her father, rescues her mother and little brother, finds her talent, and gets a hubby. Ms. Norton is my favorite and if she must team up with someone A.C. Crispin is the best of them all. This is a good book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly good read, May 27, 1999
This review is from: Songsmith (Witch World Novels (Paperback Tor)) (Mass Market Paperback)
I have followed the Witch World series for many years and this is one of the many good stories. A girl sets out on a quest to restore her father's memory and find her mother. She travels most of the witch world during the course of the story. It is a fine adventure with the right balance of romance, danger and action. Thoroughly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars An all time favorite, May 12, 2006
This review is from: Songsmith (Witch World Novels (Paperback Tor)) (Mass Market Paperback)
If there is one book that I will forever treasure - it will be this one. This is the book that introduced me to science fiction/fantasy stories.

It was written wonderfully that the magical aspects seems so realistic. The descriptions of the Witch World were so fascinating, and the magic the witches and adepts do were very compelling - vividly described that one would think it could happen. "A place here and yet not here..."

Eydryth and Alon make good "music" together. Their love story was so beautifully intertwined with the greater themes of the plot. While it is part of a series, the book can also be a stand alone story.

I strongly recommend it!
