Editorial Reviews

Italian pianist Stefano Battaglia and his trio pick up on their acclaimed 2011 release The River of Anyder with a new selection of chants, hymns and dances, all written by Battaglia and inspired by descriptions of visionary places from art and literature from Alfred Kubin, Jonathan Swift or Charles Fourier to Italo Calvino. Songways finds a new harmonic balance between archaic modal pre-tonal chant and dances, pure tonal songs and hymns and abstract texture, Battgalia says, thus documenting the natural development of the Trio life, with a larger space for action from the drums.

Recorded April 19-21, 2012 at Auditorio Radiotelevisione svizzera, Lugano

Format: Audio CD
Stefano Battaglia is a italian pianist, he came from classic music and you can feel it, here with a trio (Salvatore Maiore on bass and Roberto Dani). This is a very special album, very poetic and beautiful. The songs are chants, hymns, dances...is not exactly jazz, is something between jazz and classical music. He use modal, pre-modal and popular music. The inspiration came from particular places from the works of Kubin, Swift or Italo Calvino. In essential beautiful music, very intensive, very spiritual. Wonderful sounds, very pure, Battaglia could be not a jazz pianist, but is a incredible musician. High recommended

The adjectives used by the first reviewer all apply and are correct: pure, beautiful, and spiritual, etc.
I disagree, however, when he says Battaglio could not be a Jazz musician - this pianist, bassist Maiore, and drummer Dani, have invented something engaging, thoughtful, pleasurable, and new. Italians have been doing that for centuries...why can it NOT be Jazz?
