Sonho; Dream; Sueño..., October 17, 2001
This review is from: Sonho 70 (Audio CD)
I have listened the music of Gismonti for many years ago, when I had about 15 years old, my brother showed me an album of an unknown musician,(we loved to play jazz and brasilian music by the night), Orfeo Novo is the title of the LP, and the titles of the tracks; Salvador, Sonho, Parque laje, Indi, etc; ¡What a experience listen to these tracks for the first time!.especialty to me the track Sonho; The rythm is mágick without percusion and the sensual sounds plenty of spiritual Atmosphere captured my Soul forever, the modulations of the music showed us for the first time the incubus of the today so called "World Music",and the music flowed in ours minds totally free of scolastic definitions evocating the Surrealistic World of Dreams opening the inner gates of the inspiration and the time of our secret life who exist only in the Universe without words..., Music of our dreams, music plenty of magick from nowhere. The LP remains in the old discotheque, and the unique efects visit us every time whe play the record in the machine, opening the time and place of our secret garden of creation and freedom, every time we listen to Parque Laje, Indi or Sonho, The experience remains the same but every day is diferent thanks to the genius of Egberto Gismonti; and when my life is dark or sad, I go to that unique place in my Soul where memories are alwayss playing the magick music of Gismonti, it is the same place where I find The Real Joy to continue...Guided by the voice of Dreams. sueño, sonho...

Excellent early 70's album from Gismonti, December 12, 2004
This review is from: Sonho 70 (Audio CD)
Gismonti has been amazingly prolific in making many great albums from early 70's up to mid 90's.
Typically, his music is somewhat "rough" but very powerfull, emotive, rich, risky and bold during all the 70's. It is mostly acoustic work with many Gismonti's vocals too. It is a little difficult to access because of the complexity; but once you are in, it will stay with you forever. Most of this earlier work is under EMI or lately reissued under Gimsonti's CARMO labels.
The 80's are a transition period from pure acoustic to a mix between acoustic and electric instruments; Gismonti's vocals tend to disapear. Typically, the music becomes less provocative and more polite than earlier Gismonti's work. It is somewhat more civilized and more easy to access. Yet, the music remains highly sophisticated and creative; but with little less (good or bad?) surprise. Lots of these albums are under ECM label.
The 90's are a period where Gismonti's Group was founded. The music move towards more classical style: very polite, distinctive, fluid and elegant. Yet, there is still this amazing creativity, complexity and freshness of all Gismonti's works.
A few movie music albums are part of this period too (Kuarup, Amazonia). They tend to have more electronic effects but they stay into the elegant distinctive spirit of Gismonti's group latest compositions. Most of these albums are under ECM or CARMO labels.
About SONHO 70 album, it is an early 70's album, making a progressive transition bewteen Gismonti's Estreia 1969 album and all the other albums of the later 70's. The bossa-nova influences are gone in this album and we get into Gismonti's pure style: a kind of complicated mix between classical music and popular brazilian musics. This album features very creative and powerfull melodies, very spirited, that you will not find anywhere else. Yet, it has its own style and all the later work of Gismonti will soubnd different than this album. However, this is an authentic Gismonti masterpiece.
Please, look at my other reviews of other Gisonti's albums if you wish.

Viva Egberto !, January 5, 2004
This review is from: Sonho 70 (Audio CD)
Ave Dom Egberto, 10000000000 estrelas
