5.0 out of 5 stars Super Rave for this book and instructional DVD
I was totally surprised about the DVD I found in the back of this book. I was just expecting a book. I love the new book "Real Beauty", she seems to kinda repeats herself alot though. But the DVD is awesome. It shows you some really nice eye looks and she really goes into detail and goes over and over so that you really can master what you are trying to acheive...

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed in book
I was very disappointed with this book. I was hoping to get more specific advice regarding color choices and eyebrow shaping. For example, under choosing eyeshadow colors: "If you're unsure about colors, stick to neutrals." That's why I bought the book, because I was unsure of eyeshadow colors!!!The tip for choosing shadow is going by hair color and not...

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Rave for this book and instructional DVD, March 20, 2003

I was totally surprised about the DVD I found in the back of this book. I was just expecting a book. I love the new book "Real Beauty", she seems to kinda repeats herself alot though. But the DVD is awesome. It shows you some really nice eye looks and she really goes into detail and goes over and over so that you really can master what you are trying to acheive. She goes step by step on how to appy foundation, concealer, powder, lipstick & gloss, blush (both cream and powder) and of course eyes. You get to see Cindy Crawford and Christy Turlington without makeup. You get to see that models are not perfect like we all think. Highly Recommend

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book and video combination!!!, September 26, 2004

This review is from: Sonia Kashuk Real Beauty (Spiral-bound)
This book is a totally refreshing approach to makeup. In the style of Bobbi Brown, Sonia Kashuk encourages women to feel beautiful no matter what they look like. Her approach to makeup is natural, but does give you a few tricks on achieving certain looks (i.e. the smoky eye). She also is a little bit more relaxed regarding "makeup rules". Amazingly enough, the best part of the book is the video! I have bought many books on makeup (Bobbi Brown, Kevyn Aucoin, Linda Mason) and I have never learned so many new and completely natural tricks and techniques than from Sonia's video, it is amazing!!! I truly reccomend this book if you want to learn how to look perfect but not "made up".

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and informative!, February 12, 2004

This review is from: Sonia Kashuk Real Beauty (Spiral-bound)
I'm the mom to 3 (4,3, and 6 mos.) and had let myself go, was discouraged about my appearance. I really wanted to turn myself around, in health, weight and appearance. My hubby decreed 2004 the "year of mommy's makeover" and made this one of my Xmas presents (he found it himself). I was a bit skeptical, but once I read it, I was hooked. While I've worn makeup on and off for years, I learned a lot. The chapter on foundation, concealer and powder was worth the book - I finally have a clue how to use concealer properly! Also loved the chapter on eyes and learned how to use eyeliner in a natural way. She has a lot of little tricks of the trade that help when applying makeup (and now seem obvious after reading them!). I'm having a lot of fun playing and trying different products. I also loved the section with the magazine editors - it was great to hear from beauty experts who look at gorgeous women all day. Their views were really neat. I love her attitude about what beauty is, because I feel the same way. It's great to know you don't need to wear 50 products and spend two hours a day to look good. I don't want to be a supermodel, I just want to look more polished and feel better about me, and this book was a great help.

5.0 out of 5 stars stop looking- you found the how to make-up book!, April 26, 2004

This review is from: Sonia Kashuk Real Beauty (Spiral-bound)
I read the other reviews and do not agree with the negative ones. I never was taught how to use foundation, loose powder, concealer, etc. After reading this book and watching the included dvd, I completely understand how to use makeup and how to apply it. The dvd included clears up any questions raised in the book (for example- how to use foundation around the lipline before applying lipliner.)I have the bobbi brown books which give some good tips, but Sonia's way is much more approachable and helps you not to be intimidated by the cosmetic counter! She explains in her dvd how to hold makeup brushes, explains why you'd use powder vs cream blush, etc. I Her line at Target is pretty great too if you're looking for a line of make-up, but you don't need to use her line to get all the benefits from this book. Give it a try!

Sonia Kashuk reminds us we all have beauty and it is about being our personal best. I have some facial distortion left over from bells palsy. I felt like a clown in make-up. I quit wearing it. Now I am wearing some again and applying it differently....for my age and my current face thanks to this book. I was stuck in the time machine and now have updated my look. I'm back today ordering this as a gift to my adult daughters.

5.0 out of 5 stars It really is a real beauty..., May 1, 2004
This review is from: Sonia Kashuk Real Beauty (Spiral-bound)
I love this book! I checked it out of the library to see if I wanted to buy it and I'm completely sold... The photos are gorgeous, the book is informative and the dvd is awesome.

Alot of people are complaining about the book not explaining everything step-by-step, but that's what the dvd is for. It's sometimes hard to read instructions or to look at a photo and see if you're doing it right. If you watch the different sections after reading each chapter, you can watch exactly how she does everything.

The book goes in depth, contains all the information, has step by step instructions (just not photos for them), lists all the supplies and even explains how beauty is not just skin deep. Apart from the makeup and nail sections, there are sections on skin care, teeth, eating healthy, fitness and just caring for yourself in general. The dvd shows you how to put all your new found knowlege to use. I especially loved the concealer part... I realized that models have blemishes, too. It's just that they can find a makeup artist to make them 'disappear'!

I'm definitely going to buy this set and another one for my sister. I'd recommend it to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book that's full of practical ideas!, August 3, 2006

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I've never been a big makeup wearer, but as I've hit my 30's, I've become more interested in wearing makeup to enhance my look. I bought Kashuk's book last year, and it's been great!

The book is extremely practical, and Kashuk walks the reader through each and every step in doing makeup application. She also includes many close-up photos so you can see exactly what she is doing and really learn her techniques. To make it even better, the book also includes a DVD where you can see Kashuk at work. I've pulled the DVD out several times over the past year to brush up on the techniques.

Kashuk also breaks things down for the reader so you see exactly how she applies each product. After covering all of the various steps in the makeup process in individual chapters, she then devotes an entire chapter to showing how a made-up face comes together step by step.

While Kashuk does use beautiful models and actresses as her subjects, what I like is that she emphasizes bringing out what's unique about each individual. She also shows many variations and color options; several times, she'll use the same model and show two different looks so you can see these options.

Overall, it's a great book! I recently bought Bobbi Brown's Beauty and it doesn't hold a candle to this one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed in book, January 23, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Sonia Kashuk Real Beauty (Spiral-bound)
I was very disappointed with this book. I was hoping to get more specific advice regarding color choices and eyebrow shaping. For example, under choosing eyeshadow colors: "If you're unsure about colors, stick to neutrals." That's why I bought the book, because I was unsure of eyeshadow colors!!!The tip for choosing shadow is going by hair color and not eyecolor/complexion coloring. Since I am brunette, I should go with mochas and chocolate browns, if you are blonde, go with taupe and creams. Also, the brow advice, "Full, well-shaped brows are the final frame to the eyes." It then goes on to say that well groomed brows are a must, and the key is to make them look as natural as possible. Tells you to brush your brows up and then follow your brow line and tweeze the strays and fill in the sparseness. Help, what do you do if you do not have a great brow line to begin with? If I had a opportunity to look through the book before I bought it, I would have put it back down and gone on to another book.

As a girl who's just beginning to wear makeup, this book was extremly helpful in many ways. sonia showed how you can use makeup to enhance your face, not hide it.She made make up sound fun and easy to do. she showed you how to achiveve differnt looks and styles w/h changing all your products. it was real neat to see models before they had makeup on, and realize that they are just normal people. although she repeats sherself alot, this book was fun, creative, and helpful

with the exception that sonia, the author, repeats herself at times it's a great book. she emphasises that it's the skin and the person behind the makeup should always shine through and make an impression not the makeup. makeup is there to enhance the best things about you. she talks about eating healthy and taking care of yourself. although she only uses her own products in the book and video, it is her book, it's still a great book.
