5.0 out of 5 stars A frequently overlooked classic
This is quite easily the best 2D sonic game around, though it is a bit different from the others.

To beat the levels with a good ending, you need to time travel back and forth between the past, present, and future. Each era presents a slightly different look and layout of the level. As you might guess, this can make for some interesting puzzles...

The graphics are amazing for a game of it's time. The music is also quite good, and of higher quality then pretty much every sonic game until Sonic Adventure.

It's true, the game won't work on XP out-of-the-box. However, if you search on google for 'sonic cd cult korama patch', you can find an unofficial patch that updates the game. The update process is a bit technical, though, so unless you know what a directory path is, I suggest you avoid it.

All and all, if you can get it working, this is well worth the $5 or so you'll spend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant game, September 14, 2005

This game is a great classic in the Sonic game series. It is a shame how this PC version doesn't suit certain computers, such as a computer running the Windows XP Operating System. Unfortunate for me because I have this OS, but for the fortunate ones out there - it's a classic! Grab it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Underrated Sonic Title, March 20, 2011
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Sonic CD (CD-ROM)
This is by far one of the most innovative platformers at the time of the Sonic series. Many people haven't had the chance to play this because it was on the Sega CD system that bombed later to be replaced by the Saturn. After the development of Sonic 1, some of the main parts of the Sonic Team left to the US to work on Sonic 2 while in Japan, Sonic CD was created entirely different.

The brilliance that lies in this game is that before many of the RPGs to others exploring different storylines, endings, and all that fun stuff is that this game does entirely different realities. Get this: Sonic CD you have the Past, Present, Future (Good), and Future (Bad). It's up to you to correct the past and present to get the best reality. It plays like any other Sonic game and if you find yourself stuck, you can easily switch into a different time period.

Some might complain about the load times but come on- seriously? This at the time is brand new technology loading entirely new levels on the VERY FIRST DISC CONSOLE before the PS1. Of course it'll be a bit slower! Duh! Even the PS1 is slower in many aspects. Still this does not disappoint. The load time is simply an entire new level, time period, and takes into account the corrections you make on reality destroying robot factories.

The game for its time pushes graphics (That's what Sonic was about before Sony), gameplay of the platformer, and exploring different realites- Did I mention pushing soundtrack? Yes there's actual electric guitar playing on it. It's way ahead the 16 bit and 32 bit common music. The CD had the potential of storing a legit soundtrack made by actual musicians instead of that midi file crap. Quite impressive!

Overall this is the most underrated Sonic title. I've played all the Sonic games through and it's up there with Sonic 2 for me ahead of Sonic Adventure. This is probably one of the first all out games in art direction, technology, soundtrack, and of course, the amazing gameplay that Sonic once had. Any Sonic fan will appreciate the effort and creativity that went into this game exploring entirely new directions before Square Enix, Nintendo, and Sony.

2.0 out of 5 stars Do NOT Buy if you own an up to date PC, December 27, 2010

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sonic CD (CD-ROM)
I purchased this amazing Sonic title for my pc thinking I could revisit it without buying a Sega CD for my old school Genesis, boy was I wrong!

This title ONLY WORKS with a Windows 95 & 98 computer, Windows XP owners and all of the above are out of luck. I boot up the game on my XP and even on a friend's laptop and I still got the same error, it complains that a file is missing or some crap. BOTTOM LINE; This game is too old to work on newer computers and I guarantee you will waste your money if you depend on it to install on a newer machine.

There's only one way to play Sonic CD now for people without old computers, which is the way Sega had originally intended it to be played, on the SEGA CD.
