Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Sonic The Hedgehog CD(1993). Sonic's third adventure, and the only Sonic game released on the Sega CD system.

By 1993, Sonic 2 had already been out for a year, and the series had become one of the biggest things in gaming around that time. But before Sonic 2 had even come out, Sega had begun the workings of what would eventually become Sonic CD (hence the reason for the similar graphics like Sonic's animations and the shield and lamposts from Sonic 1). It was also around 1993 that Sega had begun to promote their Sega CD add on, so they also thought it would be a good idea to jump the gun and throw their mascot on that system as well. Thus, Sonic CD came into existence.

Now unlike some Sega CD games which were just Genesis ports with added CD-quality music and the "CD" thrown on the end of the title, Sonic CD is actually its own game, and boy does it sure do a lot to stand out from the others. This adventure sports 2 awesome soundtracks (one for Japan, and another one for everywhere else), TONS of levels, some new tricks, and most evidently the main feature of the game: the ability to time travel. That's right. You can literally CHANGE TIME PERIODS WITHIN EACH ACT FROM THE PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE! How cool is that? Sadly, to this day, no other Sonic game (and even most games out there) has ever tried to mimmick this awesome feature. Now some Sonic fanatics out there will tell you that Sonic CD isn't an official Sonic game, and they'll put it down relentlessly in favor of the Genesis titles. While I agree that the Genesis Sonic games are all classics, don't listen to these fools who diss on this masterpiece.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sonic the Hedgehog CD July 20, 2005
A Kid's Review
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Okay, this is, hands-down, Sonic's GREATEST 16-bit adventure EVER! (SCD's Special Stages still remain a favorite!) Q-Sound Stereo music (which completely topples anything that the Genesis/Mega Drive could ever reach!), 7 awesome-looking Zones, a new time-travel system, and cool new characters and moves make this Sonic's best old-school quest EVER!

(Is OBSESSED with Spencer Nilsen's "Sonic Boom")

P.S. This is the Sega CD/Mega CD version. If you have the PC version and are trying to run it on Windows XP, don't try it. THE PC VERSION OF "Sonic the Hedgehog CD" WILL NOT WORK ON WINDOWS XP!

Just so you know. Ok, bye!

5.0 out of 5 stars Easily one of the best games of the 16-bit era. October 19, 2008
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I first played Sonic CD in 1994 when I was 16 years old. I was the only kid in my town (of 1200 people) who owned a Sega CD. Not because I had money, I was just a super-geek who worked bad jobs to pay for it. I still remember the first time the game booted up. I remember the first time I heard the theme music. I remember where my new Sega CD was sitting on the floor next to the TV. I can still remember the time of day. There are a hand-full of games that I can remember these kinds of details about. Super Mario 3, Sonic the Hedgehog 1, Metal Gear Solid, Halo. This was the best. In my list of favorite games this is STILL number one. Anyone who says this wasn't a "real" Sonic game is new-school. You weren't there. You were either in daipers or playing Super Mario World on your SNES. This is THE definitive Sonic game. I've played them all. If you are a gamer, you owe it to yourself to pick this up (or check out Sonic Gems on Gamecube- it has better resolution and frame-rate on the CG). The soundtrack is timeless. If you can recommend a game with a better soundtrack (any game, new or old) please let me know. I would like to check it out. This game holds the gold standard for me. I love it, and would recommend it to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Sonic Games to date June 19, 2008

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Let's cross time and space to retrieve the fabled Time Stones from Eggman on the Little Planet and rescue Amy Rose from Metal Sonic!
Without further ado, Review time:
Graphics: Great Graphics on par with Sonic 1 & Sonic 2, the Special Stages' graphics and the moments where the Sega CD's scaling capabilities are shown are the best along with an awesome anime-like sequences for the opening and ending!
Control: Standard Sonic controls, but great nonetheless despite a bit of a watered-down Spin-Dash
Sound & Music: The Sound is awesome, the music is not too shabby (and Sonic Boom is awesome) but I found the Japanese and European versions' music is better than the US version in some ways after listening to them on [...]
Plot: Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik has learned of the secrets of the Seven Time Stones of the Little Planet over Never Lake and plans to use them for Dominance, while using Metal Sonic to kidnap a female pink hedgehog named Amy Rose and now it's up to Sonic to save the day!
Fun-Factor: Collecting all seven Time Stones, traveling back and forward in time, awesome gameplay and soundtrack is without a single-itty-bitty doubt one of the best Sonic Games!
And so: Buy it! It will make this a great addition to your Sega/Sonic/Sonic Team/Sega CD Collection!

5.0 out of 5 stars An overlooked high-speed classic November 19, 2010
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Every Sonic fan knows the old-school Sonic lineup: Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuck- Wait! Are you saying I'm missing one? Oh yes I am! Sonic 1, Sonic 2, SONIC CD, Sonic 3, etc!

Sonic CD was released for the notorious Sega CD, an add-on for the Genesis. It was the only game on the add-on to sell around a million copies.

Sonic CD took what made Sonics 1 & 2 so awesome, and multiplied them by 10! This game has all the high-speed Sonic action you could ever want. The new zones were better than ever. In the Special Stages, you navigate Sonic around roads to destroy UFOs to gather Chaos Emeralds; a unique goal for a Special Stage.

The music and sounds are extremely amazing thanks to the compact disc.

The graphics are really great. There are even animated cutscenes!

Overall, this is one Sonic game you have gotta try! It's the best Sonic game ever!
