A very cool game,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Video Game)
I remember when I had the sega Genesis. I loved it, and I ecspecially loved the sonic games! I remember, however, that I was really jealous of my cousin's game gear. So for a long time I wanted a Game Gear..... I never got one, because I couldn't afford one! But last December I ordered my first game gear from Amazon.com for just [price] and I love it! I mainly bought it because of the Sonic games, and although the sonic games for genesis are better, the one's for game gear are still real good. Sonic 2 for game gear is a real fun game with cool levels. The first level is pretty hard but its real fun!A cave to start things off? The first boss is way to hard to beat for only the first level! I figured out an effective way to beat him though... what you need to do is, stay near the little monster thing. When those very annoying bouncy balls start coming down the slope( the high bouncy balls)stay near the little monster until the ball is close. Then, jump a little towards the monster, and then away from it. With practice you'll get the hang of it! The second level is also real cool! Here's a tip.... On the first act of the second level, get 100 rings and then you'll get a life. Then go near the handglider, but do not jump on it. Jump over it... yep.. down where the spikes are and move over to the left. You should find a life box. Jump on it and then commit suicide by spiking yourself to death. Repeat the process over and over again! ( note: when you do this make sure that you get the invincibility box first.) I think that riding the hanglider is pretty fun! The secong act is kinda hard though, but once you learn to gain complete control of the hanglider(which does take practice) then everything will be ok. The boss for this level is pretty cool... one of my favorite bosses! A huge Bird! First jump on the little birdies and then you fight their momma! Jump on her head right after she has fired a fire ball at you, and repeat the process. The third level- an underwater act is pretty cool but its extremely frustrsting( act 2 is) One Huge relief, however, is that this boss is the easiest in the game! jUST JUMP ON THAT BALL THAT IS on his head!( only jump when it's on its head!) The fourth level- "Green Hills Zone" is great and very fun. It is very easy to get many lives here! ( I can't beat the 3rd act though, because I always end up falling on spikes! However, with the use of codes I have played the other levels a little bit. I really enjoy the battle with siver sonic! He's cool, but he's extremely easy! I just hope that I can fingure out a way to beat the last act of Green Hills Zone..... So all in all this is a great game! It's just a little bit hard, that's all!

What I said above pretty much sums up my feelings about this game. I have played practicaly EVERY sonic game in excistance, with only but a very few exceptions, and am a HUGE Sonic fan. of all the games, I have had the least amount of fun with this one, why? Mainly because the difficulty curve went beserk and would make you think such a thing as a "difficulty curve" was just a figment of your imagination and never existed in the first place. I was un-able to even get passed the first zone because of the "dodgeball" boss, dodging has never been my strong suit in gaming. This boss however has gone done in history as what many people would call the hardest boss in Sonic history. And guess what? I used a level select code (which I would put here if I still remembered it) to get myself to the last level, the one you could only get to if you had all the Chaos Emeralds. And I beat the final boss, hands down, with little to no difficulty once so ever!! Losing too many times to count on the very FIRST boss, and not even losing one life to LAST boss? That's like, mayjorly messed up! Also Tails (my fav character) wasn't playable, instead you had to rescue him from Robotnik, (that's pretty much the whole plot, though with the way the Chaos Emeralds are hidden, I dought that hardly any one who plays this will be able to acomplish this, even if they beat Metal Sonic). I'd don't get it, the Genisis version is like SOOOOO much better! But if you have a Game Gear it might be worth a buy, it's dirt cheap (I've seen it for sale for 1 penny before!), and is better than most other Game Gear titles, though not as good as all the other Sonic titles on the system (such as Tails Adventures and Sonic Triple Trouble). Bottom line: It's not really that bad and is still fun, if you're a hardcore Sonic fan you probably should get it, and if you're looking for more Game Gear games you probably should get it, every one else get the Genisis version instead!

I used to play this when I was a child back in the day...then I sold my Game Gear (big mistake!) And now I have it back.
It was hard then...and is still hard now. Probably the hardest Sonic game ever! The main reason: No rings at the boss levels. Sonic has only one chance to beat each boss or dies. On level I REALLY hate in this game is "Scrambled Egg Zone: Act 2" I literally spent at least 40 times (thanks to an abundance of extra lives) trying to figure out how to get past that level. Navigating the "Tubes of Doom" as I call them can be downright frustrating. So is searching for all the Chaos Emeralds and accessing the Crystal Egg Zone. Green Hill Zone: Act 3 is just as frustrating. It's all about memorization and mapping out the level's layout in order to succeed. (Remember, Act 3 has NO rings). I would only recommend "Sonic Experts" to play this game. Good luck earning the "real" ending (obtaining all six chaos emeralds). Even i'm not that good. And i've been playing Sonic since it first came out in '91.

While Sonic 1 for Game Gear was a good game, it didn't have much of the high-speed action we expected. Sonic 2, on the other hand, contains that.
Sonic 2 for Game Gear is not what you expect to be if you had played the Genesis version: It has a completely different storyline and zones. Tails is kidnapped by Robotnik and Sonic must save him. Isn't Tails supposed to be the sidekick? Anyways, the gameplay is identical to the Genesis games, which is great. The music and sounds were still well-developed. What is kind of a letdown is that there are no Special Stages. You gotta find the Chaos Emeralds in the zones themselves. There's your challenge for ya. Overall, it's another great Sonic game....that was eclipsed by the more well-known Genesis version.

Although there are quite a few improvements from Sonic 1 (Game Gear), the game also has its cons. Whatever you do, don't listen to the product information. You can't play 2-player, and you certainly can't play as Tails. Sonic has to rescue Tails. I think the plot is very poor, but that's probably because Tails is my favorite Sonic character (other then Metal Sonic and Omega) and I think it's absurd that Tails would have to get rescued because Eggman took him from his home. The Genesis version's plot is much better-it has 2-player battle and cooperation, and Tails makes a great first impression on Sonic by helping him get to the Death Egg.
Pros: 1-Sonic has a better color palette then in Sonic 1. Although he isn't his original cobalt blue, he's still a brighter shade of blue other then Sonic 1's faded sky blue shade. 2-The locations are pretty fun, and I don't think it's a problem that they don't relate to the Genesis version. It provides more of a variety and shows that Sonic Team is creative with Sonic's exploring grounds. 3-The different activities (riding in a mine cart, hang-gliding) make the different locations stand out from the others and make them more unique, especially how the activities relate to the locations. 4-The graphics have improved, and they don't have the blurry feel there was in Sonic 1. The scenery relates more to Sonic rather than looking poorer than Sonic himself. 5-The bosses are more challenging than Sonic 1's easy to beat bosses (ex: Eggman hovering around pointlessly). They're also more creative like the bosses in Sonic Chaos. Cons: 1-Tails isn't playable, so it's kind of like an extension to Sonic 1 just with a different plot. Mostly, it's nothing new. 2-The plot is exactly the same as Sonic 1 just this time he saves the animals of Westside Island instead of South Island and Tails is thrown in there. 3-Some of the zones are fun and challenging, while others are just long and hard. It depends mostly on how you look at them. 4-The badniks don't have much of a new design and most of them are kind of boring. They just disappear in a cloud unlike how animals/seeds usually come out. Some badniks have a special stragety for defeating them, so that's okay. That's all the pros/cons I have. Overall, I recommend it if you can get it for a price under $10. Just be warned though-Tails IS NOT playable.

This game was first released on the sega master system (not the genesis). It is also one of the most challenging sonic videogames that I have ever played. I can't even get passed act 3 on the first level because the boss is so hard. It is rumored to be the hardest sonic game ever. I can believe that. Other than that hard level, it is a great classic game. The colors look great and the graphics are just like any other game gear side scroller for 1992. I would definitely recommend this game if you are into buying/collecting/playing vintage videogames like me.

I've played several sonic games(14 to be exact), and this one is probably the worst. It's probably the best one on genesis, but I don't have a clue what they were thinking when they made this one. there's nowhere to run or speed up in this game. in the console version, I used to dash through the loops and run down the spirals until time ran out. in the fist zone, the only place where you can even come close to having fun with the sonic speed that made the series famous is going down some hills on a rickety set of tracks in a mine cart. Infact, I didn't see a single loop, or any spirals, or anything relative to one. there is hope though, sonic chaos is so much fun that it's probably worth 12 copies of this game. the most important thing to remember if you want to buy sonic 2 for game gear is not to expect anything nearly as good as the console version, so get sonic chaos.

The best hendheld Sonic game except for sonic advance,

Well, this is a great game. It starts where Sonic goes on a trip to find adventure. He returns, only to find all his animal friends missing. He then finds a note from Tails,"Sonic, Robotnik has kidnapped me. He says that if you don't bring six Chaos emeralds to his lair, he'll kill me!"Sonic sets off on the hardest Sonic game apart from Sonic spinball. The levels are; 1.Underground zone(81%)Fans expected Green hill first, but this level was there instead. It's quite fun. 2.Sky high zone(78%)This is quite a fun level, but act 2 is too anoying! 3.Aqua lake(75%)On act 1, this seems easy. But act 2 is the hardest single act in the game! 4.Green hill(85%)Does it need any introduction? This is the most popular Sonic level EVER! 5.Gimmick mountain zone(83%)This is one of the best levels in the game! 6.Scrambled egg zone(80%)You've found Robotnik, but if you don't have all the chaos emeralds, you won't go to the next level. 7.Crystal egg(87%)This is the last level in the game. It's quite hard, but beating Robotnik feels good! VERDICT:This is a great game with lots of hidden stuff. The gameplay is also good.87% |
