Game Informer Review

See, Sonic and I have been having some problems lately, and to Sonic Team's credit, Heroes is the closest they've gotten to what I'm looking for in an all-new Sonic title. The different teams and combo system add necessary (and refreshing) updates to the blur's usual gameplay; but the level design (while markedly better than Adventure) still offers up a few too many watch-characters-shoot-through-loop-de-loops for my taste. It's a servicable and innovative effort, but there's still room to grow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blast Through With Sonic Speed!, June 14, 2004
This review is from: Sonic Heroes (Video Game)
Remember old Sonic on the Megadrive? How it was all about FUN and SPEED, and not the exploration and questing that the latter Dreamcast sequels seemed to have in abundance?

Well, Kids, Sonic is back and better than ever and now, thanks to some extremely brave and very, very well-executed gameplay changes, regains his foothold as the best platform hero in the world, bar none :-)

Granted, it feels all wrong playing Sonic with a PS 2 pad, but I know I speak for us all when I say I'd rather have Sega Games this way than not at all.

Sonic Heroes consists of all the usual levels - Seaside Hill Zone, Casino Nite Zone, etc., but it's in the teamwork where this game excels. Now, instead of just playing as one Hedgehog or one Echidna or one Bat or whatever, you have to employ teamwork across a cast of three characters per level in order to beat the game. There are 4 teams, so 12 playable characters in all - and range from Staples like Team Sonic (Sonic, Knuckles and Tails) to past characters (Rose the Bat, Big the Cat and Espiosa the... purple thing) to downright oddball characters (Charmy the Bee, for instance). On each team, one character is good for speed, one for strength and one for flying, and you do need to make good use of each character to beat the level you're currently playing. Also, the teams are graded in terms of difficulty, so beginners can start with Team Rose and work their way up, frustration-free.

This adds a huge sense of fun to the game, as well as keeping the Sonic concept fresh and exciting: hedgehog-runs-along-flat-plane is dull-dull-dull, but for the speed freaks the bonus levels are all about speed, and highly reminiscent of the Bonus Stages from Sonic 2. Similarly excellent is the presentation, as one would expect from a Sega game - there are a wealth of options to be unlocked, like new modes of play, the fabulous CG movies, different voices for the characters etc. - all of which makes for an excellent gaming experience.

Thoroughly recommended, this is another feather in Sega's cap and one of my personal favourite Sonic games to date. Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars lots of fun, but a hard game, January 6, 2005
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Sonic Heroes (Video Game)
The last time i've played sonic was years ago, on my megadrive...
this game is about the same concept of fast running, collecting rings, going through loops and jumping like insane... but here you get to choose between 4 teams of 3 characters which are pretty different by gameplay, but the levels are about the same, which makes it pretty boring once you finished with 1 team...
the controlls are brilliant... team action at it's peak, one player for speed, one for flying and one for attacking, the only real problem i had with this game was the fact that you have limite lives... the game is very hard at some points, and it's very very easy to lose, and once you lose all you're lives, you need to start from the begining, which gets VERY frustrated and make the game harder then it is, when it's suppose to be a kids game.

i do recommend sonic heroes, it's very good, very colorfull and you'll have lots of fun with it, just know that it's not exactly a rollercoaster ride, which was pretty much what i expected

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the best, January 23, 2004
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Sonic Heroes (Video Game)
how can you all diss this game? it's one of the best of * a lot* of sonic games i've played. the stages are fun, and the team thing works fine. the one thing i don't get is...

*SPOILER*
how can shadow be a robot or clone or watever the heck they say he is? i want my old shadow back :(. oh well, i'm guessing he's the real thing..hoping.

*SPOILER END*

aside from that, there's great gameplay, stages, and everything else. i'm also glad that they brought the Chaotix back

Pros:
great gameplay
great graphics
fun overall
good storylines
espio and shadow
speed!

cons:
voice acting
some frustrating moments
i can't figure out how to control the cannon in the chaotix metropolis level.
i hate team rose

ahh. the voice acting. let me rant for a second
Sonic:good, sounds like sonic
Tails: Oh gosh, i can;t stand his voice! grow up Tails!you should be at least 15 by now!HE SHOULDNT SOUND LIKE HE HAS ASTHMA
Knuckles:good, fits his character well
Shadow:good, kinda deeper and more mature than last time. at least he hasn't got that LOOK AT ME I'M BAD quiteish thing going on
Rogue: better.much better
Omega: it makes me want to smash things...i know he's a robot...but geez...
Amy: ok, i guess
Cream:waaaaay to high
Big:no comment
Espio:nice, except when he does that army-general thing. he's sixteen. geez.
Vector:i don't really pay attention to his voice. i'm paying more attention to him throwing up his friends *shudder*
Charmy: BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAADDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
aside from the lack of being able to change their voices to japanese, this game is overall fun and original, and i will beat it....someday. until some new fantastic sonic game shows up, this will be my second favorite (it now goes SA2B, SH, and SA1 is tied for second.
