Proving that 1995's amazing comeback, "Sea Of Light", was no one-time fluke, 1998's "Sonic Origami" puts forth a convincing case that Heep are not just revitalized, but back at the top of their game. This CD features some of the best songs of their career: songs like "Question", "Change" or "Everything In Life" rank up with anything they've done over the years, but they aren't even the strongest tracks on it; that honor is reserved for the epic, orchestral "The Golden Palace", and the opening track, "Between Two Worlds", dedicated to the memory of their deceased former singer David Byron and bassist Gary Thain; the first time I heard the latter track, I got chills up and down my spine at the resemblance of singer Bernie Shaw's voice to David's, and the sheer emotion of the performances and lyrics.
"Sea Of Light" was their best album since 1977's "Firefly". This is their best since 1973's "Sweet Freedom". An absolute essential.

I am becoming a fan of the Bernie Shaw led Uriah Heep. (I know, what took me so long -it's only been over 20 years)
Sonic Origami is a significant album because the band finally developed either a method or chemistry to actually writing good songs. Albums like Raging Silence up to Sea of Light contained some OK songs and some real boring generic-sounding rock songs; They really missed Ken Hensley, who had become an incredible song writer with enough material to have great songs left off of albums, and to fill up three solo albums. We saw the potential with Sea of Light which was a step in the right direction, but Sonic Origami, to me, is the BEST album (post-1980). It's at this point that Uriah Heep became a viable band once again. Their concerts did not have to be a run-down of the greatest hits of the old days with a few new songs sneaked into the mix; Now, armed with a crop of good songs, some from Sea of Light and all of Sonic Origami, fans would begin to anticipate and demand that they play the new songs -- Awesome --I'm glad they have become this new entity with the latest and most stable line-up. A great live show from this lineup can be purchased with the CD "Live on Air" --- It precedes Sonic Origami, but it shows the new band playing a great show on their terms -- long live the Heep!

Sonic Youth,
This review is from: Sonic Origami (Audio CD)
Released in Japan in September 1998 and making into the U.S. record shops in June 1999, the band reaches out to make an epic statement and it comes so close to being a classic.
The 14 tracks - with 13 penned by band members: eight penned by Mick Box (g) and Phil Lanzon (k), four by Trevor Bolder (b), one by Lee Kerslake (d)/Bolder/Box/Lanzon - are paced by the tribute to the late David Byron and Gary Thain, Between Two Worlds, along with In the Moment and The Golden Palace. Bolder has blossomed as a songwriter - I Hear Voices, Only the Young, Shelter from the Rain, Sweet Pretender - with lead vocalist Bernie Shaw is nothing short of phenomenal. After muddling through most of the 1980s - and suffering from a number of personnel changes, while trying to stay the course with an ambitious studio and concert schedule - Uriah Heep found renewed energy with a solid lineup and a step back from cranking out albums in an old school fashion. This is sonic youth from veterans who could have easily taken the trampled route of forgoing creativity to pursue the lucrative "oldies" tours.

Sonic blisters,

I bought the SO cd when it came out in 1998 and it did not disappoint.I've been a Heepster for about 30 years and Heep are like a fine wine, they only get better with age. This line up of Box, Kerslake, Bolder, Lanzon, and Shaw are every bit as good as the classic line up, just different. However, they do justice to the classics that we all love. When it comes to new material such as Sea of Light and Sonic Origami they have created some great music that stands up there with the classics. Buy this, you won't be disappointed!!!!!!!!

I've always loved Uriah Heep in all of their many incarnations. Always inventive and sincere, their songs were very diverse in type. You never knew what they would come up with next. They have evolved over the years into a thoughtful, mature band. I bought "Sonic Origami" because I was curious, not knowing what to expect. I was amazed at the quality of this CD from beginning to end. Both the songwriting and production are absolutely top-notch. Make no mistake, this a different sound than they had 30 years ago. And granted, depending on how you look at it, that could be good or bad. But for me, I think this a great new sound. It's hard to pick a favorite song out of these since this album is totally excellent from start to finish. No clunkers here. I always listen to it straight through without skipping any songs. And in my experience, that's rare. I honestly can't wait for their next studio album with new songs. After 30 years of giving me pleasure, I hardly think they could disappoint me now. Rock on, Uriah Heep!

Amazing Album! 30 Years Plus and Still Kicking!,

Uriah Heep was one of my favorite bands back in the seventies. I lost track of them until I happened to hear Sea of Light. I was greatly impressed - this band is still very strong and this lineup must be the best ever.... The lyrics to their songs are intelligent, compared to most of the drivel bands sing about these days. Sonic Origami has some wonderful tunes that epitomise the greatest aspects in rock 'n roll. Mick Box wails on his guitar... Lee Kerslake is a virtual tank on the drums, Phil Lanzon lulls you with his keyboard, ex-Bowie sideman Trevor Bolder on the thunderous bass and Bernie Shaw... one of the best rock vocalists this side of Neptune... altogether a cohesive rock band that still knows how to have fun while kicking out some of the best rockin' tunes you've ever heard. "Across the Miles" is just plain beautiful. Buy this album now and discover again what rock music is really all about.
