Racing Sonic games should be a good idea, right?,
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Sonic R (Video Game)
Sonic R has appeared on the failed Sega Saturn and the PC.You get to choose from a selection of characters, each with their own abilities. Sonic can double jump, Tails can fly (For a limited time), Amy drives a car that can turn into a boat, Knuckles can glide, Eggman can shoot missles, etc. However, that's one of the complaints about the game. Tails's tails make a really annoying spinning sound, Amy's car is too slow, and Eggman needs to pay 10 rings per missle he shoots. (SPOILER ALERT RIGHT HERE) The unlockable characters are Eggman, Metal Sonic, Metal Knuckles, Tails Doll, EggRobo, and Super Sonic. Metal Sonic and Knuckles can glide on water, EggRobo is a robot equivalent to Eggman, and Tails Doll......just floats. He has no special powers other than floating.... (SPOILER ENDS HERE) There are only 5 courses. Wait...just 5? Compared to Mario Kart's 20? Wow. Each course has their own gimmicks, of course. There aren't really any flaws with the racing, but the CPUs can be cheap at times. There are Chaos Emeralds and tokens hidden in the courses. You have to be in first in order to keep the emeralds, but the tokens have a different story. When it comes to looking for the 5 tokens in each course, it's like playing a 3D scavenger hunt without any enemies. It doesn't matter what place you have to be in when you have all 5. Getting all 5 in a course lets you unlock a character...after beating him to another race. What is confusing is that once you start up your game after beating it, you'd think everything would still be there, right? Well, it doesn't turn out to be that way. You have to save/load your games every time. There's also a multiplayer VS mode, along with Time Trials and a new Tag Mode, which is self-explanatory: You play tag with the CPUs or your friends. The music is kinda weird. In the courses and title screen, women sing the songs. The character models look kinda weird. Why are Sonic's arms so thin? Overall, it's not a bad racing game, but it needs improvement.

Unfortunately Sonic didn't see much the light of day on the 32-bit sega saturn. And the titles featuring sonic on the Saturn is either a port, SONIC 3-D BLAST, or compilation, SONIC JAM. Both pretty good, but neither having brought anything new to the table, with the exception of SONIC JAM, in where there is a fully 3-D Sonic world<---though very small and not entertaining aside from it's content.Sonic R, was the 3rd (SONIC DRIFT 1&2 gamegear) of failed attempts in Sonic's racing genre. although this game features no go-kart racing aside from amy/eggman. But, what makes this games worth picking up it's the sheer rarity of Sonic on the Sega saturn. Sonic R isn't really a bad game, but it isn't really great either. ok defines it over all. graphics: 4 out of 5 probably the only thing good about this game are the graphics. with fully textured polygons and very colorful charaters and enviroments, the graphics alone will keep you playing just to see the next stage. There is a bit of pop up in the distance, as is typical in older systems, but won't effect the gameplay at all. The level design, admittedly, is very well done and looks just like what you'd expect a 3-D sonic game to look like. especially the final stage, my personal favorite!! If you look at some small details in some levels, you will see that Sonic Adventure on dreamcast definately borrowed some of the object designs as they're almost identical except the 32-bit, 128-bit difference. gameplay: 2.5 out of 5 in sonic R, R is obviously for racing duh. well it isn't exactly set up like a racing game. you have to push up on the d-pad to accelerate and many people find it frustrating trying to accelerate and turn using only the d-pad.(controls-next) There are several modes of play in an effort to create replay value. there's one were you will set out to find and collect blue spheres scattered throughout the stage, which is the least fun mode of all. there's a tag mode in which u play tag which is pretty fun actually, but only for minutes. there's a two player head to head mode, and you can flip the levels; another attempt in creating replay value. one of the games perks include the abilty to take alternate routes/short-cuts, noramally unaccessable, by collecting emblems points throughout the stage; a very clever job done by the level designers.... this game would have been an actual adventure game had they just placed a few enemies and obstacles here and there, which was possible. thinking back, the game is fun and only took me a few tries to score a gold medal on each stage. playable characters include: sonic, super sonic (must unlock),miles "tails" prowers, knuckles, amy, and dr. robotnik/egg man. controls: 2 out of 5 as mentioned before, this "racing game" does NOT feature an actual acceleration button considering the many buttons on the saturn's controls. many people will be disappointed with the main protagonist have the worst control of all. it is a taxing task just to go foward while trying to steer and while u'll get accustomed enough to beat the game, you'll never steer perfect. one of the pro's however, is that all of his moves remain intact; he can still spin and perform his spin dash, although pulling it off is akward. remember up is accelerate, and to spin you have you be in motion, well DOWN on the d-pad is spin...? it may not sound bad, but wait until you try it. spin dash is easy enough; from a stationary position, or moving, press down and action; and, u can pump it up by mashing the button just like the classic sonic games. this is also the 1st and last time sonic is able to do a double jump, which is espicially useful for cutting corners. tails can fly and handles much better than sonic in which you'll maybe progress much faster. knuckles can glide and is as fast (he's always in the lead), amy doesn't run but rather cheats by driving a go-cart, and eggman hovers around in his hover/sphere thingy.. each character has they're own unique feel and tricks, but over all the controls are sloppy; you're literally drifting into walls the entire time. sound/music: 1 out of 5 one word, LAME! some people like the recycled excuse for music that plays throughout the entire game, but i couldn't take it. luckily, you can mute the vocals during actual game play, and just listen to the instrumentals. now this shocks me because ALL sonic games predating this one had great music, EXCEPT this one!?!?! it is CD quality and is crystal clear, very nice sound effects, little to improve on the already great sounding effects of rings. and the songs they chose are a japanese pop songs and not even a good ones at that. it only becomes memorable because of its monotony!! you'd think playing SONIC CD (sega CD) and SONIC 3-D BLAST(saturn version), both awesome soundtracks, that going into the CD era of games would improve on an already great sonic soundtracks, yet u will be disappointed. i'd rather hear the gensis' crappy sound chip music, than this CD quality garbage anyday. over all this game is note worthy for being rare and the one and only original sonic title on the sega saturn... if you have most of the sonic games already in your collection, well get this one already, but don't expect much....if you're building a sonic game collection, save this game for the very last one to buy.

The Game Itself is a bit frustrating but The Graphics/Scenery are amazing and the Music is just awesome, If you have a Sega Saturn, I would recommend it all the way, Besides Two of SEGA's Forgotten characters made their first and last Appearence in this Game (Spoiler) Metal Knuckles and The Tails Doll, yes, if you've heard of the Tails Doll from the internet, he is real, (well By that I mean hes not fanmade..I mean come on its a floating doll that has a Lifeless expression that looks like tails, and apparently, your not supposed to play the game at 11:00 PM, since 'the Tails Doll will come out of the Game and eat your soul', load of crap I know)
