It worked in a rainforest,
By John T. Harrison III (Honolulu, HI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: SonicWeb ICH500 Mosquito and Insect Control (Lawn & Patio)
I was skeptical. Living in HawaiÔi, with an annual rainfall in my neighborhood of over 125", we lived with a lot of mosquitos. Doing laundry meant running a gauntlet of hungry biters.A neighbor had tried a competing, propane-powered mosquito trap, that was patently ineffective. The manufacturer of this competing unit explained to my neighbor that the species of mosquito most problematic here, the Asian Tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), was not the target species for their unit. We deployed the SonicWeb device in mid-January, and by the middle of February, both my wife and I noticed a distinct reduction in the number of mosquitos. We also noticed that one of our pets, who has an allergy to mosquitos and who had suffered from a chronic raw irritation on his nose, experienced a marked healing. By the end of the month of February, the mosquito population by our laundry was virtually nonexistent. Interestingly, I've noted very few adult female Aedes albopictus on the sticky paper. Most of the mosquitos I see there are small, leading me to suspect that the trap is attracting juveniles and males, effectively interrupting the mating and reproductive cycle. It's now June. Yesterday, conversing with another neighbor, one living right next door, I asked if he'd noticed a decrease in mosquitos, and he agreed, saying that his visiting son and daughter-in-law, who previously had been particularly affected by mosquito bites in prior years, had remarked on the fact that none were present this year. I'm not generally given to unsolicited product recommendations, but the SonicWeb unit has been a product that worked as advertised.

generally a great product,

I was skeptical about this product but we purchased a home in an area that was obviously going to have a major mosquito population. I purchased two machines and have to change the "fly paper" regularly or the flying criters are in line waiting to die. I am not sure about the acre coverage but for the price they are GREAT!!

Broken after 1 1/2 yrs......,
By Sue from MA "Sue from MA" (Massachusetts) - See all my reviews

The first year the SonicWeb worked great - it is a much needed purchase, as we have a child allergic to mosquitos! However, we are at the start of the summer in year 2, and the machine is not working at all. I called the company, and I am out of warranty (1 yr warranty), and they could not provide me any other number or helpful information to assist with repairing this broken machine. Definitley would NOT recommend to anyone.

Actually works,

The best is that is runs off electric and you don't have to worry about changing that propane all the time. I was nervous at first, but after a week I had to change the trap due to dead bug overflow. My wife didn't even know we add this thing and commented on how she did not see as many bugs lately.

i have owned the sonic web for 3 years. it still works good. i have had it in the weather for the full 3 years. replacement papers are expensive, but the mosquitos in my area are unbearable without it. it's not a cure-all, but it sure helps.

Sonic web,
By A Customer
This review is from: SonicWeb ICH500 Mosquito and Insect Control (Lawn & Patio)
I ordered this product after seeing a television advertisement. I usually never fall for those "paid advertisements" but this seemed like a no lose deal. I've had the SonicWeb for a week and a half now. The first week it caught about 50 mosquitos, about 5 flies, and thousands of real small red bugs. I still get occassionaly bitten when outside by the pool but the mosquitos don't drive me in like they used to. Over the last week the SonicWeb has been true to form and caught clsoe to 50 more mosquitos. It took a few days to start catching mosquitos but it seems to have kicked into gear. I'm not sure if it actually "reducing" the mosquitos in my yard but it is at least catching some of them. I'll probably keep the unit to see if it continues to work. I just hope I'm not drawing more mosquitos to my yard because of the unit. My friend recently purchased a "Mosquito Deleto" and he asid it caught about 10 mosquitos in a week. He lives in a more urban part of town so there may not be as many mosquitos to catch. It's not a real expensive piece of equipment for the results that it has shown so far. I'll write a followup review soon.

Buy a mosquito Magnet.,

Tried both traps. Mosquito Magnet was supremely effective. This one was not. Read the entymological research and it is pretty clear why.

We bought this product for our home & also for our camping trips. It was easy to put together & is easy to travel with. We used it for the first time last weekend on a camping trip. It was nice & sunny some of the time & it rained some of the time. No one in our camping group was bothered by mosquitos during our trip. We have it running in our backyard now & have had no bites!! Having 2 children & being a mom who loves the outdoors, I feel very secure using the product!! ... It was convenient buying it on line & I loved getting the sale price ... It's well worth the money!!

Bug Murder!,
By Larry Smith (Fort Worth, TX United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: SonicWeb ICH500 Mosquito and Insect Control (Lawn & Patio)
I recently moved to the hill country on the outskirts of Fort Worth. Last year I lived in the city by TCU, and I was literally consumed by mosquitos. I decided to purchased a Sonicweb believing the problem would worsen with the location change. I have almost 2 acres, and I placed the Sonicweb about 50' away from my back porch. It was easy to set up, and, at 2 bills, it was a good price compared to those expensive to buy and maintain propane traps (those tanks are not cheap for 3 weeks of use, not to mention the octenol, nets etc.). The sonicweb has a gooey 'fly paper' cylinder that surrounds the heartbeat speaker/octenol hanger. Just plug it in and you will hear the heartbeat and see the LEDS flashing. I have used it for about 5 weeks, and I can honestly tell you that this thing is COVERED with bugs each week before I change it. I seem to have more 'no-see-ums' or biting gnats out here than mosquitos. This thing seems to keep them away in the back yard, but I do get bit in the front yard (farther away). You literally can not count the number of no see ums, gnats, flys, moths, weird country bugs, and mosquitos that are stuck to this thing. It is really easy to change the flypaper - you won't even touch a bug. Anyway, I can go out back for a smoke and not have a single mosquito bite (I would get several with each smoke in the city). I left it in the rain right after I changed the paper, but it was still worked normally. A few things to consider: 1) It is really dry this year and since my lawn is not yet planted, dirt will get blown on the paper and reduce it's efficacy. Keep it off of loose dirt. Also, don't aim your mower at it, or you will ruin a week's worth of bug death. 2)Any bug will get stuck if it contacts the paper - I have seen a butterfly or two on the web. 3)I have only seen a moderate number of skeeters stuck on the web, but I have not been bit by many either - maybe its because there are less gutters and people out here and alot more dragonflys (which it does not catch). Most of the doomed bugs are flys, gnats, and no-see-ums. Is it better than a simple piece of flypaper? I can't honestly tell you - I'll have to do an experiment. For the money, I feel it is a good deal. I have just ordered 4 more refill kits (...) (...) It is one year later, and I feel that the Sonicweb is an excellent fly catcher. As for mosquitos, it really doesn't work that well. I still have tons of bugs covering the flypaper each week, but I noticed a bunch of new flys were caught when I had the unit turned off. I guess the octenol + flypaper is enough to catch the flys. I rarely find mosquitos on the paper, but do I notice them buzzing around my head when I was setting it up. (...). Nothing works better than Deep Woods Off, and it's cheap compared to mosquito traps... |
