5.0 out of 5 stars Tested on several languages - very good! July 1, 2012
Verified Purchase
I am fluent in several languages and was pretty impressed with this app. I tested with a realistic tourist phrase which was fairly complex "I would like to visit your best art museum. Can you give me a recommendation and how to get there."

I selected English from the left drop down list, typed in a phrase in English, selected the second language from a drop down list on the right. I was impressed with the translation, the grammar was perfectly correct. Next to the text there was a button which pronounced the translation. The pronunciation was excellent and sounded like a native speaker. The intonations sounded "computer generated" but completely understandable. I tested Russian and Spanish. I am attaching a screen shot with the phrase and the translation in one of the languages I tested. This was the first random sentence that came to mind, I did not try to find a phrase that would be translated well. I was quite impressed with the results.

The words that are not understood for the purposes of the translation are displayed in English. When I made a typo in one of the words (the word recommendation) in English, the word was displayed in English in the translated section, but when the entire phrase was pronounced the correct word was used in both Russian and Spanish. I know a little about how Google translation logic works, and the fact my typo was handled so well made me think that this app is using Google translate. I experimented some using several translation engines in the browser and was able to see the same results using Google translate, and much worse results using two other machine translation packages.

The only slight negative of the app is that the advertising at the bottom of page is animated and never goes away.

This app offers every major language with excellent translations back and forth. Copy and paste hour translated text into emails, chat etc... This is the best and only translator you will need for your Kindle Fire.

Looks and sounds like a great app but won't work on the kindle fire hd. You can type in your words and hear the translation but if you want to speak your words for translation it pops up with "you must install google speech(or something like that) but that is not available on the kindle fire hd

1.0 out of 5 stars Not effective June 21, 2013

i tried to use the English to Korean function, and it drew laughs each time from my Korean friends. On a word for word basis is fine, but for sentences or phrases - does not work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazingly accurate, and fun, but. . . July 1, 2012

I can't wait until the Amazon Kindle Fire store begins to sell either the "Google Speachinput" app (currently "not available") this app instructs you to install if you hit the microphone symbol, or some other Android equivalent because half the fun of other versions I have of this (iPod and iPad) is being able to speak a word or phrase in any language and hear it translated into any other. Get this app in the meantime, anyway!

2.0 out of 5 stars No voice recognition. January 18, 2013

I have a Kindle Fire HD, which does have a microphone, but there is no voice recognition on this app. It simply doesn't do what it advertises. If there's something I need to do to change that, please let me know, and I'll be happy to change this review.

I have several acquaintances who speak English minimally, and I unfortunately, speak no other language (even after 7 years !!! of HS and college French and German). Two of my friends speak German and Spanish, while my one friend in France has great difficulty with English.

I can put in any phrase in the app, and get the written AND spoken translation from English to more languages than I knew existed.

I can't wait until I run into my German speaking zoologist friend and ask him if he's seen any alle schwarzen Schwanz Rehe? Of course, I'm going to have to practice for several hours pronouncing "alle schwarzen Schwanz Rehe," but you never know when a black-tailed deer might have come along.

Oh, my friend from Honduras will probably faint dead away when I ask, ¿Has visto alguna chupasavias amarillo vientre? unless, of course, he's just seen a yellow-bellied sapsucker.

Can iTranslate be used offline?
I have the same question as C. Eriksen, above. Is there a way to have it function without wifi? Or some download-able dictionary which will allow it to function off-line? I will need to be able to use this off-line.
