I heard David Russell on NPR and, despite the tinny quality of my radio's speakers,I knew I had to buy his CDs. The range of his music is broad, from Bach to Celtic and Gaelic to Latin music, and all are worth your attention, but the Latin album Sonidos Latinos is the best.

Russell is worth listening to for the beauty of his music and the skill of his guitar playing, but I confess that the thing that impresses me most is that, unlike even the best guitar players I have heard, he never "squeaks"!

If you love listening to classic guitar, DO buy this album. If you are a guitar player, AVOID it---you will despair at ever achieving the level of his skill.

Russell is one of the great musicians of our time, in a class with Rubinstein and Oistrakh. With the greatest possible respect to Segovia, I believe he has transcended him. He is captivating; perfect technique; expressive dynamics and control and shimmering tone beyond belief. He brings the same extraordinary understanding to modern Latin American music as to Bach, Tarrega and the rest.
I had 10 of his albums and just finished ordering the others.
I seldom gush, but this is the real deal.

If you are desirous of a guitar album to "line dance" to or do a "basso-nova" style dance to forget this album. However, if you want sit-back and listen to some wonderfully played and"atmospheric" Latin guitar music then this is the album for you. In this 59 minute album, David Russell plays most beautifully compositions by five (5) influential Latin composers--Mangore, Ponce, Aayla, Neves and Morel. To me, the compositions are all rather "mellow" sounding with loads of "Latin sounding" melodies and rhythms. All of the compositions on this album are played exquisitely by David Russell on acoustic guitar.

It's hard to go wrong by buying David Russell's recordings. I'm not a huge fan of Ponce, but the Hector Ayala pieces more than make up for that. This is music that I'll be reluctant to remove from my car when I swap out my CDs.

I was hesitant to order this artist as I had not heard the music before. I very much enjoyed the song selections and the quality of the sound.

Technically he has mastered his instrument but the piece selection could have been better, but overall very enjoyable. He is building an impressive catalogue.

I'm not quite sure what the difference is between Aire Latino and Sonidos Latinos, but I am moved more by the collection of composers found on Aire. It's personal, as always, and the playing is excellent as usual on Sonidos, but I'm not as drawn to the collection as on other CD's of Russell. It's still worth having and I will listen to it many times in the future, but there are others I will listen to more.
