buy it if you know what you are doing,
This review is from: Sonnet Technologies Multimedia Player Battery (BATG-5G30) (Electronics)
This is a lot harder then they show on any video. you need to use a lot of force, but at the same time being careful. The battery it self is good the things it came with to help you open the ipod are useless, mine broke. I ended up using a knife to open it. The installation is the hard part. If you think you will be able to open it, then you should but it.

After reading some of the reviews, I was a bit fearful about trying to open my iPod, but my experience was rather good. I think the key is to follow the directions on the included CD very carefully. Don't use the tools to try to pry the case open, you don't seem to need to twist the tool at all. Based on my replacement experience, if you follow the video carefully, it works well. As explained in the video, the key seems to be to push the opening tool into the seam of the iPod while sliding the tool up and down along one of the sides (this shown on the video, and I know it doesn't seem to make sense, but it works). Keep sliding the tool up and down the seam on one side while applying slightly more and more pressure to the tool forcing it slightly further into the iPod. Eventually, you will see a gap of about 1/16" open up on the side after having worked the tool into the iPod (don't twist or pry with the tool though, just push it into the iPod while sliding it up and down). It took be about 10 or so times of sliding the tool along one of the edges to open the gap up wide enough. Once you open one side up about 1/16", slide the tool around one of the top corners. There are some connectors along the bottom, so do that last to avoid damaging them. Once you get one side and the top open, slide the tool around the other top corner to the side opposite the one you started with. That side should open up easily. Once the two sides and top are open, the bottom opens easily, and viola its open. The rest of the installation is easy.

I've only run it through three charge cycles, but already its out-performing the one I bought off of longlast-battery.com last year. The installation was easy, though I've done it before. To those maybe a little sketched out by cracking open your $[...] toy, its really not all that bad. Just give yourself plenty of time (as not to feel rushed) and don't force anything that doesn't want to be moved. If you're still too nervous, find your closest computer nerd (you know, the kind that build their own) and it'll take them 5 minutes. I recommend it to anyone whose iPod battery is worn out.

Do not buy this battery. A little over a year and this battery cant hold a single little bit of charge, to the point where even when plugged in the ipod always says "please wait, very low battery" forever.

I purchased this battery in January 2009 and now, in July 2010, it's totally shot. Bummer!
The installation was surprisingly difficult. I consider myself to be quite good with computers - why, I used to assemble my own! - but the iPod is indeed a tight package. Once opened, the power ribbon and connector proved to be quite delicate. I was able to finish the install successfully but I can't recommend this unless you're an expert. Initially I was pleased that my iPod's battery life was back in the 6-8 hour range but within the past month, it really took a nosedive. As of today I was able to just barely eke out two hours of play, and that was strictly audio and not even video. So that said, if you're willing to replace the battery - or the iPod - in a short amount of time, this purchase is fine. But don't expect this to be a long term fix.

Okay, I have seen the reviews that say that this thing is not worth it because it is hard to open the case. Here is what you need to know, if you are not careful while opening the case, you will probably kill your iPod; however, you are probably buying this battery because your iPod is almost worthless anyway since the battery doesn't hold much of a charge. Make a calculated risk, and decide if this battery replacement kit is worth the risk of destroying your iPod.
I work with electronics and computers all day, and I love to dissect things and see what makes them work. Most of the time I can get them back together and working well without issue. I will say that I also had a tough time getting my iPod case off, and recommend that anyone not willing to lose their iPod DO NOT TRY THIS! If you don't mind the risk, it is WELL WORTH IT if you succeed. I finally managed to crack the last holder on my case to get the back off and gleefully changed the battery. Yes I marred the side of the plastic a little, but when I got it back together, I just slid my iPod back in its leather case I got for it and now it works like new. I can't blame this product for the ridiculously difficult-to-service designs of Apple. Buy it if you don't mind the risk and it might just make you love your iPod again.

Beware: This Product is Shoddy and May Destroy Your iPod,

I bought this battery and istalled in my 5.5G iPod. From the get-go, the battery life was about half of what this iPod was capable of with the original battery. I have done this replacement in another iPod, with another brand of battery, with no problems and much better battery life.
The other day I pulled my iPod out of my pocket and noticed the LCD was shattered and the case had somehow been forced open. I fully opened the device to find that this horrid little battery had inflated like a balloon, destroying my iPod screen from the inside. I had never imagined anything like this, but did an Internet search and found this has happened to others who used this battery. If you like your iPod and don't want to risk having to replace the screen, I suggest you find another battery vendor than Sonnet. This thing is absolute junk. |
