I own a 2001 Quicksilver G4 (OS X 10.4.1) that came with an 80 GB Western Digital Hard Drive. I do film work, so I need lots of space. I purchased a Seagate 300 GB Serial ATA Internal Hard Drive and this card (Sonnet's Tempo Serial 2-Port ATA PCI Adapter Card) was required for my Mac to read all 300 GBs.

Do you need this card?

First, check this website out:
(...)

If your computer is a 2002 Quicksilver or newer, then your computer is equipped with 48-bit addressing and you do NOT need this card. Your computer can read hard drives larger than 137 GB.

If your computer is a 2001 Quicksilver(like mine) or older, then you DO need this card in order for your computer to use hard drives larger than 137 GB.

REMEMBER! IF your computer was built with a Western Digital Hard Drive initially, and you want to add a second hard drive, you must switch the Western Digital to the MASTER Hard Drive and your other hard drive to the SLAVE. More info on that here:

This card includes 1 SATA drive cable, 1 SATA power cord, and the screws needed to hold 1 hard drive in place. This means that for many users, the OEM version of a given hard drive will be fine, and that they will not need to spend an additional $20 on a package that includes the drive cables. I say this at the beginning because it is not stated anywhere in the product information, and because it effectively reduces the cost of the package by 25%.

The card itself appears to function without incident, controlling a Western Digital 1 Terabyte hard drive.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this card, and would've given it a 5 star rating if it'd been about half the price. I had a syba card that i'd just bought and returned twice b/c it kept locking up my system [os x 10.5 server & 10.5 dual boot on a dual 1.42ghz ppc g4], causing kernel panics galore, reboot itself for no reason, et al. plus syba has horrible customer service too! returned it the 2nd time and got this sonnet card, which works w/o issue! however, the syba card was a 3.0gb card with 2 internal sata and two esata external for $45. this card was $75 for only 2 internal @ 1.5gb speed. i have this setup with 2 seagate 1tb hdd for my server's raid 1 config. works great and well, it actually just works period! sonnet LOVES to overprice everything they make, so nothing shocking there!

If you're using a G3 or G4 Mac with OS X 10.4, this is the right card. At about $60, after trying literally 5 other cards, this one snapped in, was visible to the system, and mounted the drives on the first try. The only drawback: you will have to jumper your drivers (see your manual) for 1.6 Gb data speed rather than the 3.0 most SATA drives are capable of. I'm using this card to build a 2 TB RAID MIRROR array in an old G4 for a large redundant storage system for my digital photos. The RAID set up on the first try, and there are no issues.

Buy with confidence lode rMac users. This is the card you need to convert to SATA if you have an open PCI slot and available power for your drives.

Having purchased and installed at least 20 or more of these for various G4 macs, I can say that this is a must have for every user who wants to use SATA!

This card is actually just a re-branded Firmtek card has extremely good drivers and updates on firmware on the Firmtek page. It has been around since 2003/2004 and is a great sata controller card. I have never had any issues with any of these cards in any Mac G4 from the 500mhz all the way to the last of the G4 MDD models and into the G5 PowerMacs

I can tell you that chances are if you are purchasing this for a MDD Dual processor model you need to "downgrade" the firmware to a more compatible version.

The latest version shipped on these contains additions for the G5 models and may cause freezing after sleeping on the MDD Dual processor models without downgrading... However I have never had that happen, but the Firmtek support page clearly lists it as a known issue and provides links for the "downgrade firmware"

I give this product 5/5 and recommend it to anyone who is looking to step-up there mac to SATA interfaces and the performance that comes with SATA.

I was looking for a PCI SATA card to upgrade my older G4 mdd Mac from IDE to SATA and this Sonnet card did the trick perfectly. It comes with two SATA ports, cables, screws, etc. I installed it in an open PCI slot on my mac, attached two new SATA drives, and OS X saw everything the first time, no drivers needed. The Sonnet card showed up in system profiler just fine, and my two new SATA drives were staring at me from the desktop just as I expected. I used OS X's built-in software RAID feature to stripe the two new drives for faster performance, and everything has been rock solid since.

My only complaint would be that I wish Sonnet (and other Mac-centric expansion card vendors) would offer a PCI SATA card with onboard hardware RAID for G4's. I see inexpensive PCI RAID cards all over the place for older Windows machines, but trying to find the same for older Macs is an ordeal.

All in all, this card from Sonnet does exactly what it said it would do, and at a reasonable price. I recommend it.
