Many young drummers have no big band experience, and many can't get that experience in their high schools. Some want to go on to college for jazz drumming, and have to demonstrate big band drumming. As anyone who has played big band drums can tell you - the drum parts are little more than guides and, most of the time, have to be interpreted. Yes, Neal Hefti, Nestico, and arrangers of their caliber knew how to write drum parts that most experienced drummers could follow, but many arrangers have no idea how to write fro drums. (I have read charts that were so bad, I would not even consider them for the bottom of a bird cage.) Igoe's book gives the beginning big band drummer a chance to learn a little about how to use fills in the big band setting. He covers the various ways "kicks" are notated and gives the drummer the opportunity to practice reading charts with these basic fills. HOWEVER - this book works best with a teacher who understands big band drumming. I would not recommend it as a self-help book.
