Image of Sonny Terry

Sonny Terry was a giant of the blues--one of the best known and most influential of all blues harmonica players. His signature shrill, 'whooping' style of acoustic folk blues harp was imitated by hundreds of players. In a career that spanned 50 years and took him from Carolina street corners to concert stages worldwide, Terry defined a style of harmonica that is still a cornerstone ... 5.0 out of 5 stars Sonny is, without a doubt, king. January 20, 2005
Format:Audio CD
This is country blues, pure and simple. Beautifully and masterfully performed by Sonny (harp) and, if I'm not mistaken, Lightnin' Hopkins (guitar) on most tracks. Sonny has a totally unique harp style and his singing really shines on this (I prefer his singing to Brownie's). It just doesn't get much more elemental and primally American than on tracks like "One Monkey Don't Stop My Show" "Ida Mae" or "'Tater Pie" Lightnin' and Sonny tearin' it up, probably all first takes too. A lost classic masterpiece.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sonny, is, king December 6, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is a fine album of acoustic, "country" Blues, basically harmonica, acoustic guitar and some tracks have drum and bass. "Country" referring to the style of Blues, southern and acoustic, nothing to do with the genre of music with that name. You listen and can imagine yourself sitting on a front porch down south, and you won't be able to not tap your toe or begin to clap. Sonny is one of the great harmonica players, he has an entertaining style as shown on a couple tracks with his hootin and on Calling Mama, track 8, where he makes the harmonica talk. The great Lightning Hopkins plays guitar on the first five tracks and the rest is Brownie McGhee.

The album is stereo, Sonny with his harmonica and vocals in one channel and guitar or other accompaniment in the other. This is a good recording with not much background noise and a live feel to it, not a lot of processing to ruin it. I thoroughly enjoy listening to this album, good Blues and down right fun, highly recommend this one Blues fans.
