It amazes me that material from artists like Sonny James is so poorly represented in todays marketplace. The "Gentleman from the South" still holds the record for the most consecutive #1 hits on the Billboard country charts (16) and has charted over 20 #1 hits. So where are they all??? His years on Capitol Records (covered by this disc) would fill a 15 disc box set. These are all great tunes but there just aren't enough of them.

Almost forgotten sixties pop-country star,

Sonny's mellow style of pop-country music did not impress everybody but he was hugely successful in his heyday, sometimes with covers of pop songs, although he also had some great original material.
Young love is the song he is best known for despite having to compete head-on with Tab Hunter's version of the same song. Of the other original songs, You're the only world I know and True love's a blessing (both co-written by Sonny James) are particularly noteworthy. Sonny took several pop classics to (or close to) the top of the country charts including (on this collection) Running bear (Johnny Preston), I'll never find another you, World of our own (both Seekers), Born to be with you (Chordettes), Empty arms (Teresa Brewer), Only the lonely (Roy Orbison), Endlessly and It's just a matter of time (both Brook Benton). This compilation provides a good introduction to Sonny's music.

Sonny James rerecorded hits by others in his own style? So what? So did Elvis and a number of other singers in other genres who didn't write their own material.
You referenced Teresa (not Theresa) Brewer. Here is a singer that made a career covering others. From Sam Cooke's "You Send Me" to Johnny Ace's "Pledging My Love" and Joan Weber's "Let Me Go Lover," she did one cover after another. And..."Running Bear?" The Bopper was dead years before Sonny released this. Are you saying that once an artist dies, there should be no further versions of his songs? That would be a terrible blow to the fans of the great music of Hank Williams. And what about the Ray Charles "Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music" project? I presume you have a problem with that? Let's give Sonny James his due as a talented singer, guitarist and INTERPRETER of songs. Sonny's no different than a host of others, including Ivory Joe Hunter, who have made wonderful music over the years INTERPRETING the recordings of others.

Listening to Sonny James never gets old. I have bought thousands of CDs & albums, but Sonny's recordings tops them all. His voice is always in perfect pitch, easily reaching all of the notes without the slightest vocal strain; a feat very few artist can boast of. Being a vocalist & musician myself, I have admired Sonny's music since I was a child. His influence was the driving force that started my musical career and the ride has been wonderful & extremely rewarding. This CD represents some of Sonny's best. Sit back, give it a listen and enjoy some of the best music that has ever been recorded.

I gave this as a gift to my best friend's 88 yr-old dad. He loved it!
Every time he mentions some old singer he loves I go right to Amazon.com to get it for him. He just lights up when I give them to him. It brings back wonderful memories for him.
