Obie hates Los Angeles and all the junk that goes with it-especially trying to fit in at Thomas Turney High School. But with bounty hunters trying to capture him, his Renegade roommates urge him to lay low with his band and forget about ever getting back hoome. it's hard to blend in at school, though, when you've just made enemies with the football team. Obie can't keep away from Allison, the most popular girl in school and the girlfriend of the star quarterback, Sledge. And when his true love, Inna, shows up and pleads for his help, Obie must return to the one place he fears most.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 8 Up–Being a Visigoth warrior from another dimension does not make it easier for Obie when the bullies attack him at school, but as the immortal 15-year-old tries to conform to modern-day Los Angeles, he finds the constrictions on his powers frustrating. When his evil aunt kidnaps his roommate, Obie travels back to rescue Berto and find his mother's rune stones. Combining gorgeous guys, runic spells, and time travel in a readable and thrilling way, Ewing is set to have another successful series in the vein of her "Daughters of the Moon" books (Hyperion). Reluctant readers up to the most sophisticated teen bibliophiles will be eagerly awaiting the next installment.–Lynn Evarts, Sauk Prairie High School, Prairie du Sac, WI

4.0 out of 5 stars Love it Like Daughters of the Moon!, July 21, 2004

I just finished Barbarian and I loved it. You do not have to read DoTM to understand it at all. I know I was worried because this book and Escape came out before The Becoming, which is supposed to finish DoTM, but rest assured, You can get through this book without being spoiled -of course this is speculation, as The Becoming still isn't out yet.
Admittedly the writing is kinda choppy as it has been in some of Lynne Ewing's other books, but it's interesting to see the same universe as her previous series taken from a different perspective. That's what made The Sacrifice so good. Boys sure think differently than girls, don't they?
I like the main character, Obie. Like Vanessa in DoTM, he sets the story into motion without seeming like an idiot. The boys of SoTD seem to know what they're doing a lot more that the girls of DoTM.

5.0 out of 5 stars New Series by Lynne Ewing, November 27, 2004
This review is from: Sons of the Dark: Barbarian - Book #1 (Hardcover)
Pretty good book. After The Becoming I was thrilled to see this book. It's really great. Seeing thrings through a guy's perspective is really different, and the book answered alot of questions I had about Nefandus. I think Obie is an interesting character you can relate to and I definatly recommend reading it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good, January 4, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Sons of the Dark: Barbarian - Book #1 (Hardcover)
A very good book. It explains a lot more about Nefundus and it's kind of cool how Lynne Ewing connected the Daughters of the Moon to The Sons of the Dark. It was a enjoyable book.
