5.0 out of 5 stars What an amazing book!
As a middle school teacher, I am constantly searching for books like Sons of Liberty. Adele Griffin writes about themes that will grab a seventh grader and she does so with careful attention to each sentence. Not once does Ms. Griffin try to pull a weak sentence over her young audience's eyes.

For teachers interested in this book, Sons of Liberty would fit nicely...

3.0 out of 5 stars Sons of Liberty
This book was okay. As an adult, I was able to grasp the meanings, but the author did not go very deep into the details of the story line. I constatly felt like I wanted more information, but the author was just skimming the surface. It also seemed like this book was a little longer than it needed to be. I am not sure that I would recomend it for my students.

For teachers interested in this book, Sons of Liberty would fit nicely into a psychology unit or into a unit dealing with the start of the American Revolution.

Adele Griffin has a true gift. This novel just grabs you by the collar and pulls you in. Her dialogue is truly inspired. One of the best children's/young adult books I have read in a long time!

4.0 out of 5 stars A boy in his struggles with his family., May 9, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Sons of Liberty (Paperback)
This book is about a boy, named Rock. He lives with his army-like dad, his smarter, older brother, baby sister and his mother who is on the brink of going crazy. The dad is very abusive and treats Rock and his brother, Cliff, like soldiers. Rock believes what his father says when he criticizes the boys. However, Cliff is smarter. He has a plan to try to keep his family together. Cliff plans different ways to make things better for the family. He also helps Cliff and Rock's friends.

Rock is not a good student. His dad has convinced him that school is not important. He finds he really likes History. His history teacher and friend is the only person that understands him him. He has an assignment to write a paper on the American Revolution. Throughout the book, he relates his family and personal experiences to the characters, events and times of the revolution. This book was a 4 star because it's aimed at 5th to 7th grade readers. I'm in ninth grade; it just didn't hold my attention. The plot and characters were interesting but it's definitely a book for younger people.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Real World Situation That Occurs In Teen's Lives Everyday, May 1, 2000

'Sons of Liberty' was a very majestic book. I know a lot of my peers who could relate to the conflicts that occur in this story. 'Sons of Liberty' was writtin by Adele Griffin and was a nominee for the '1997 National Book Award'.I would assume that this book would be intended for 7th and 8th graders; possibly 9th. It wasn't too sophisticated but there were a few arduous, or hard, words. Out of five stars, I would give it 3 stars. The only aggravating thing was that it took so long to get to the main point. I read half of the book before I actually got to the main conflict. When it got to the remarkable incident, the story had meaning with schocking details. It made up for itself and became a pretty good book.

5.0 out of 5 stars great, April 27, 2005

This review is from: Sons of Liberty (Hardcover)
Rock, a thirteen year old kid that has a dad in the NAVY, is constantly moving, is totally tired of it. On the other hand, his brother Cliff is actually fine with it. But Rock is so tired of it that he makes a highly detailed plan to run away from home. But of course, Cliff is totally against it. So Rock is determined to work around it. Rock has some support from his friend May. She wants to run away with him. He is not exactly sure why, but he thinks that it is because she has some problems of her own at her house between her and her father. But it is not going to work without the support of Cliff. So he is going to do whatever it takes to convince him to come. So I can't wait to read on further in the book.

My favorite quote was' "His fingers wrapped tight around his paper. He'd add even more things to it, maybe, when they get to Arizona. And then he'd send a copy to Ms.Manzuli when he was done, like Cliff said. His free hand fumbled with the door handle, yanked open the door, and crawled into the small, empty space that his brother had created for him. There was so much left so much left to write. Because a revolution is a strange and complicated thing, no matter how well you try to explain it." This is my favorite quote because it truly shows how true authors have different points of views. In this case, this author thinks strongly that change is annoying to him. I used to feel like this, but now I have changed my opinion due to an attitude change (I think). And also, I know of many authors that feel like change is a wonderful thing.

I think that this author has writing techniques this is way out of other writer's leuges. It seems as if she has spent 1 of 9 of her cat lives just to make corrections. And it will blow a thesaurus out of the water is one saw the amount of her synonyms. It is as if she will never have to write another book if this one gets 'recognized'. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in a book that is mind-blowing awesome!!! And to anyone that likes a genius for an author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sons of Liberty, November 18, 2008
This review is from: Sons of Liberty (Paperback)
This is an incredible YA novel in every sense, the kind of book that at once inspires and haunts you. Adele Griffin writes the story of two brothers who help a friend run away from home with a subtle simplicity that is heartbreaking without being cheesy. It is well-written, well-themed, and even as an adult I found myself in awe of what a bunch of jr. high/high school kids could think and do. Absolutely beautiful.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sons Of Liberty, March 15, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Sons of Liberty (Paperback)
I like the Sons Of Liberty book, because it had to do with the military. The military has always fascinated me and made me think. Most likely there is someone who has or had a dad in the military that does the same thing. Also there is people inthe book that acts the same as my sister and I do.

The best part of the book, was the first chapter. It shows you just what the book is going to be like. Rock and Cliff's dad woke them up really early in the morning. Then they went up on the roof to fix a leak. It just shows how their dad treats them in this book.

The most vivid story elements are the conflict and the characters. The conflict is that their father that was in the military, treats his kids like they are training for the army. The conflict just shoots ot at you in the first chapter too. The characters are explained more and more through each chapter. Rock is nice and kind that helps his dad. Cliff is lazyand doesn't get along well with his brother. The others are also descrbed in the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars The runaways are back!, October 7, 2003
A Kid's Review
Why buy a book when you have no clue what it's about? Well I¡¦m going to tell you about a book called
¡§Sons of liberty¡¨ by Adele Griffin. It¡¦s a fiction book and also an adventure. It is 230 pages but the book is a small book.
It is about a boy named Rock Kindle, who has a brother named Cliff Kindle. His mom is named Katherine Kindle, and his dad is named George Kindle. His dad is very mean. He would make Rock and Cliff get up in the middle of the night and tell them to fix the roof or something else. Its called Interrupted Nights. His mom is scared to go out of the house. His best- friend is a girl named Liza Faella. He and his brother help Liza run away from her home to find a boy named Seamus (Seamus lived in New Haven).
When they got to the place where Seamus lived, they couldn¡¦t find him. So they decided to do fun things there when were at New Haven. When they were ready to go back home, Liza decided to stay there.
When they got back, Cliff and his mom wanted to go to their Aunt Louisa without telling their dad because they want to get away from their dad for a while.

The books weakness is that the author didn¡¦t give so many details on the story. The more details, the more the interesting the story is. The strength of the story is that it teaches you a little about the American Revolution, but at the same time the book is an interesting and fun to read too.ƒº

I think the author did a good job on writing this story, but if it had more details it would have been more interesting. I would recommend this story to other people because this story is an interesting story and you can learn a lot from it. The types of readers who would like this kind of book is probably the types of people who likes adventures and people who likes stories with a lesson.
