5.0 out of 5 stars All About US!!!
This Author has done a great job in his short stories in bring out the good and the bad about black gay men. Unlike many other authors he did not water down anything from sex to what really happens to gay men. The characters are real and any one can relate to these character reguardless if you are gay or not. I Strongly recommend this book to anyone who runs across...

2.0 out of 5 stars Pop Shelf, Not Top Shelf
D. J. Murphy's book of short stories, "Sons Like Me" failed to distinguish itself from the caliber of the writing of a couple of the (popular) contemporary African-American gay authors. If you are starved for books reflecting the lives of brothers "in the life" and want to support African-American gay authors so much so that you're willing to purchase "pulp fiction", then...

D. J. Murphy's book of short stories, "Sons Like Me" failed to distinguish itself from the caliber of the writing of a couple of the (popular) contemporary African-American gay authors. If you are starved for books reflecting the lives of brothers "in the life" and want to support African-American gay authors so much so that you're willing to purchase "pulp fiction", then this book may be just your taste. As with works by other authors of this genre that I've read, the writing here is not "characterized by skill, lucidity and polish" (one of Webster's definitions of "literate"). The plot lines and character development have some merit. I gave this book two stars (instead of one) only because I've seen worse. What do I know, though? Other books in this vein are pop sensations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eye Opening and Entertaining, January 31, 2004

This review is from: Sons Like Me (Paperback)
This author has managed to fit several issues within the Black Same Gender Loving Community all in the same book. It is informative and entertaining from start to finish. Once I started reading, I couldn't stop until I was done. I am looking forward to D.J. Murphy's next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real and Honest, January 4, 2007

The short stories in this book were both a real and honest protrayal of what is actually fact within the Black gay community. With these four short stories Mr. Murphy has successfully covered just about every scenario that is currently out there. From the currently popular term DL brotha to the self confident Black gay man. These stories have showed a true picture of the treatment received from the familes whether they be total rejection, some tolerance as well as full support. I applaud DL Murphy for this book.
