Someone has been foolish enough to sabotage Calloway Enterprises.
The family is circling its wagons and Clay Calloway takes leave from his duties as a soldier to return to Texas. Summoned would be a more apt term, since he's been avoiding his home for the past few years. Too many memories, too many well-meaning family members. Too many chances to think about the woman who'd left him at the altar, taking his heart with her.
Pam McCall has also been avoiding Texas--and the Calloways. With her FBI connections, Pam has answered the call for help from her cherished adopted family, hoping Clay would remain away on his tour of duty. It was not to be. The moment she spies the love of her youth, the feelings she had for him rush to the surface. Why couldn't he have understood that she hadn't wanted to surrender to a marriage forced upon her by an irate father?
When these two agree to a truce in order to solve the mystery of Calloway Enterprises enemy, the emotions of the past mingle with the stronger passion of the present. Both are forced to re-examine what they need from one another. Will they be able to let go of the long-nursed heartache and try again?
Ms. Broadrick braids a wonderful story of passion with an intriguing mystery and secondary plot that draws a reader in to sit a spell.

Better than that!, April 22, 2001
This review is from: Sons of Texas : Callaway Country (Paperback)
It always surprises me that different readers can rate a book so differently. I liked this one, perhaps because it invited me into a bit of a stretch at the beginning (which also was used to end the story). Nobody makes love without waking out of a sound sleep, but, given that bit of fantasy as true, the rest of the story moved along. This story could have been twice as long, so I have to commend the author for clipping it here and there to the basic storyline. It could have dragged -- it didn't. Instead I got two love stories intertwined. Nicely done for what the author was trying to do.

Plot was flat and unrealistic, May 14, 2000

This book had two storylines - and both storylines left you wanting more. Two old lovers reunite after being apart for several years - and even though both were still in love with each other - the factors that were keeping them apart did not ring true for me. It seemed like situations were contrived to add more pages to the book - and the plot that was used is one that a lot of authors have used too often. Especially in the case of Clay Calloway and Pamela McCall.
The 2nd story line - with Kate Calloway was slightly better, but the characters had no depth for me. That storyline was a little better - but the overall book itself left me feeling flat and dissatisfied. The main characters - especially Pamela - were not that likable and I found myself wanting Clay to just dump her to find someone more worthy. I was disappointed with this book.
